Choisya too close to magnolia tree

Hi

My son in law planted a choisya less than two feet away from a magnolia tree despite my protests. I think he was aiming to create a screen. Both plants are under four years old.

I'm not overly precious about the choisya but I'd like to replant it elsewhere but have read magnolias have shallow spreading roots, so I'm afraid of damaging them.

Is it better to keep the choisya pruned or will it compete with the magnolia to the detriment of the latter?

The Choisya looks far enough away for you to be able to lift it and replant it @cucumber without harming the magnolia. The Choisya is shallow rooted so you shouldn’t have to dig too deep and cause much disturbance. It might be best to wait until late winter, just before both plants start to grow again, although I have recently moved young shrubs here as it’s been relatively mild.
