I just went to my local homebase store and the car park was packed as they are having a sale. Are they really closing down ???;it's been a great local source of a variety of gardening items for me

Mine is closing too, but although they have massive "administration sale" signs outside, very little inside is actually reduced yet.

I always found over priced compared to Wikes Homebase , but they did have a good selection of compost .. I popped in mine that’s closing as well nothing reduced yet .. they had the lights on low made the place feel weird .. and no way would you be buying electrical goods ,, well I wouldn’t how do you get your guarantee

I vowed this summer I would never be seduced into buying another Homebase plant after two I got proved to have the tiniest root balls and had been plonked in ridiculously large pots to up the price. Seems like I won't have the chance to backtrack. :) My local recently introduced app parking, and as I don't have a smart phone, that would exclude me buying anything I could not carry home anyway.

I agree the stuff is overpriced, @Spruce, but we don't have Wickes or B&Q here.

That's very sad. Ours is being taken over by Sainsbury's, so another bloomin SM. I don't like B&Q. They had good garden planters, chemicals, lawn weed 'n' feed and we did buy their own brand paint. Who wants another SM right next to Tesco? And there was good free parking.

Shops around here are disappearing fast.

When Homebase were taken over about eight years ago by an Australian company they were 'supposed' to work wonders with the store but failed to understand what the people in this country wanted and tried to push their own products. They only lasted two years and were then sold. The current owners have been in negotiation with various other companies and are now offloading a large amount of their stores.

The one up the road from me has discounts on lots of stock so perhaps it's only shops that are definitely going that have full administration sales.
It was handy but far more expensive than any other chain. I think the problem was they weren't particularly good at specialising on a theme so had a mixed message. They couldn't decide if they wanted to be a garden centre, indoor furnishing or a diy store.

A friend just bought a kitchen and has had a nightmare. Supposedly the website has already been sold to another entity and I know the range bought a large number of the shops.

Awful for anyone who has ordered a kitchen or bathroom from them recently. :hate-shocked: And for the staff, of course, losing their jobs.

I think Dobbies are closing 17 G/C's in total by the end of the year or by early 2025. If they can't lower the rent on some of the other store, then there could be even more closures. They are to dam expensive, so I am not surprised about the closures.
