A few weeks ago bought three Amarylis bulbs from Thompson & Morgan - potted them up but any growth has been extremely slow.

I should say that these bulbs are of the type that have had the old leaf growth cut off flush at the top, the only signs of activity with two of the bulbs has been that one of the old cut off leaves has started to grow - on one bulb this is now about 5mm tall, on the other maybe 2mm. I guess they're growing about 1mm every 2 or 3 days.

Note: I would usually buy one of those 'bulbs in a box' (with a pot) which always have nice healthy shoots out of the box and grow rapidly. Thought I'd try something different this year ........

    Probably growing new roots.
I'd actually prefer a dormant bulb as opposed to one that has been trying to grow inside a box.

Keep it at room temperature and just moist would be my advice.

The bulbs you have bought this year may not have been "treated" so are growing normally. My amarylis from last year has already flowered and gone over. Patience!

I bought 3 from Farmer G. Planted on 11 Nov; 2 have new shoots, but Tabasco is being very bashful!

Unrooted bulbs need a longish rooting period before they put up the bud. I understand that technically best rooting environment is a cool and dark place (that sounds like a fashionable night club  ) but mine just get a kitchen foil hat.

The "ready made" ones in pots have already gone through that period so are ready for light and room temperatures.

Oh how I miss Wilko's, they always sold the leftovers in January for pennies. I never managed to get a second year out of them, but just the first one was well worth the money.

I now have two on the go, potted up after a month of drying in the shed, currently rooting in the porch with their foil hats. With any luck the buds will start to form in about January.

Timing Amaryllis is a bit fiddly in my opinion.

I bought my first amaryllis from a local SM( don’t say it) about three weeks ago now. It has grown about 2cm from behind some previous cut off leaves. What has grown is now very pale and brittle so I’ve consigned it to the greenhouse. Rightly or wrongly I have :sad:Given up on it.

The Tabasco now has a few millimetres of growth, so something's happening.

One of ours is in flower, but the other is still not showing any growth. Both bought from Lidl at the same time.
