Must admit I don't watch too much TV since I've had my computer and I record anything that looks interesting for later. But I hope to watch football tomorrow
I gave up watching Coronation St when they killed off Martha Longhurst (work that one out). Never watched a 'reality' show of any kind. Hate dancing so not that one. Don't see the point of cookery when it is not for me to eat. Also people don't believe when I say that the last hamburger thing I ate was in a Wimpy Bar 55 years ago, Cola 1963 and never been in a Macthingy or a Kentucky ruined chicken place either.
We never miss Corrie ,it takes the mind off all things important just for a short time. I am proud to have come out and admit to watching it ,it surprising how many people who don’t watch it know exactly what’s going on.
I think I watched Corrie, once, around 1961/2 when I was on leave but couldn't understand the point of it. We don't watch soaps or reality TV but Mrs S does watch the dancing thing but usually falls asleep to it. I watch the news, some wildlife programmes, a lot of the good quiz programmes (I write quizzes) and a few police type programmes. I don't have much time to watch. Never watch gardening programmes
I was brought up on Corrie and Crossroads, my Mum always watched them. I only gave up Corrie a couple of years ago when I decided I couldn't cope with any more Leanne misery, and I didn't really care about any of the other characters any more. If you count up how many people in Coronation Street have been murdered (or attempted) over the years, and how many residents have been to prison, it's amazing anyone still wants to live there! I was into The Archers for a bit, but got bored with all the Evil Rob stuff. I like The Archers when it features actual farming problems like when they poisoned all the village with E Coli in the Bridge Farm ice cream! So I'm now soap free, but I'm addicted to mining/treasure hunting programs like Gold Rush, Aussie Gold Hunters and Outback Opal Hunters (the Aussie ones are always the best). I also like programs that explain the causes of accidents/disasters, like air crashes and bridge collapses.
I don't watch soaps, all those miserable characters bickering and squabbling all the time, and bullying each other (and I know because Beryl (late partner) watched them (occasionally) and I caught a few glimpses over the years when she did watch them) and they go on and on and on and on and on, the same old thing all the time, never ending ... bickering ... squabbling ... bullying ....... very boring
I suppose some of the radio programmes we used to listen to would be classified as soaps. Dick Barton Special Agent used to be on at 6.45 p.m. in the early 50's and that time slot was then taken by The Archers when Dick stopped. They were followed by Journey Into Space. Of course, there was the real life soap of 'Life With The Lyons' in the early 50's with Ben Lyon and his wife Bebe Daniels and their kids. Does anyone remember ITMA with Tommy Handley?
I'm not old enough for ITMA but I know it stands for "It's That Man Again". As a child I used to think my dad was really funny, it was only in later years I realised that he was just quoting lines from Hancock and The Goon Show.
Its that man again, my parents mentioned it, sounded dated even in the 60s. I do remember Around the Horn on Sundays after 2 way family favourites.
That was Kenneth Horne but he had earlier programmes called 'Much Binding In The Marsh' (with the theme tune of the same name) and 'Beyond Our Ken'.
But before my time. I do remember Jimmy Clitheroe, I thought he was funny back then, probably not now.
Round the Horne, Beyond our Ken and The Clitheroe Kid were all featured on the BBC 7 digital radio station (which I think later went on to become Radio 4 Extra, but I'd got out of the habit of listening to it by then).
Now there is a small problem. My sister and I were throwing cushions at each other and one of them hit the radio and knocked it off the table. It never worked after that, and was not replaced, so we never listened to the radio after that. Missed things like The Goons, The Kenneth Horne things, Dick Barton etc. Next time I listened was on a Sunday evening to I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again followed by Sing Something Pimple. Not got a radio now ether so never listen to it at all. There are a million books I have not read yet, gradually working my way through them.
I like to have something to listen to when doing a boring task like the washing up. It's pretty hard to read at the same time. Today I was listening to the latest series of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.
