Happy New Year

Thank you, the bud has been there for a while but this morning it was open

 

Happy new year all.
A bit late I know, but it is still Jan at least and I’m well into my annual pruning regime.
I’m finding a lot of die back, dead stems and mottled stems on many of my roses generally this year. Is this just me or have others noticed this too?
Whilst tackling my Generous Gardener I have found this,




I don’t like the look of the reddish coloured stem on the left, and I hope that I don’t end up losing that whole limb, which would leave quite a hole.
Appreciate any thoughts on it.

 

While up the garden the other day I came across a Rose I had forgot we had planted in the Autumn. Bought at the ‘Malvern Autumn Show’ called Your my Everything’ a hybrid tea from C&K Jones new for 2025z . We don’t have many Roses in our garden some my OH took cuttings from his parents garden and one or two climbers so still can’t wait too see how it will perform. I’m sure some of our Rose specialists can help you out with your query @OwdPotter .

 

@OwdPotter it's hard to say why rose canes suddenly do that, however I see that there is a split at the bottom. We had a lot of rain in the spring last year. Sometimes excess rain followed by some dry weather can cause splitting. I fear you may lose it but if you do then I hope another will grow.

 

I've got a climbing rose 'Jasmina' on a south facing trellis fence which has 2 or 3 stems which
are red and nasty looking like yours @OwdPotter. I'm planning to cut all the red/dark brown ones out at ground level in the hope I can save the rose. Wanted to do it today but didn't get the chance.

It’s a tough call to make isn’t it.
If that stem was elsewhere it’d be gone already, but I would be losing just about a whole flowering side, and balance.
My main concern is any risk that whatever malaise is causing that, doesn’t spread to the other main stem, and end up blighting the entire rose.
I’ll keep a close eye on it for now.

If you also cut the healthy cane on the right at the same time you would retain the visual balance @OwdPotter. I'd be concerned about the split cane becoming infected and any disease spreading to the rest of the plant.

 

Pruned another six roses this morning in a rare sunny spell and also cut out the odd looking bright red/black old stems on a climber. Hope I've been able to save it. Good luck with yours @OwdPotter.
