IMG_20250112_110108.jpg It's a 6 month course @Penny_Forthem about politics, the subject he is reading at Uni in Poitiers, and it's to improve his English. Poitiers has a student exchange scheme with some English Universities, such as Canterbury, Bristol and Greenwich.

It's been very cold and frosty here today, -5C this morning. The frost looked pretty.

Good day folks. 2 inches of snow still all about. crispy 18 degrees.
Nephew from mississippi soon to arrive for day visit. He's staying with his mother an hour away.
Husband and him planning to watch the Eagles FB game somewhere at a local restaurant. And since husband is in charge of the planning nothing is for certain. I may or may not go along even just to get dinner then back home.

Fires in California still a major issue. sadly more found dead. its certainly horrid.

Someone was talking about eggs, I get mine from a local farmer, at $4.00 a dozen. there is another farmer I can go to where I can get 30 eggs, unwashed for $3.00. all are brown and free ranged

      take care

Glad your back is finally showing signs of improvement, @AuntyRach. I too enjoy logic puzzles, I do the puzzle baron ones on line, good fun when I wake up in the night after bad dreams. Great for clearing the mind.
It’s been milder today, but still feels cold to me. I keep eyeing up a couple of bushes I want to get rid of, thought I might sneak out for an hour and have a go at them, but I weakened, and have been reading instead. And of course it’s far too dark now.
        Keep warm everyone.

I thought the same @Ergates, went out just before mid-day and it certainly didn't feel warmer to me, despite what the forecaster was displaying. No sunshine today either and as my fingers/hands hurt a lot, to my dismay, I could only prune three roses before I gave up. Trying to decide whether to buy new Felco's or just a new blade, mine aren't cutting cleanly.

Excellent news about your back @AuntyRach but don't do too much too soon and undo all the good work. Beautiful picture @Busy-Lizzie. The car park at Church this morning was like a skating rink so I walked over the grass verges to avoid doing an involuntary triple salchow. My feet still haven't warmed up. We were naturally a little bit stunned and quiet trying to take in the loss one of our helpers sustained on Friday but the coffee, tea and cakes went down well. There was quite o lot of thick mist around as we all left. I did not get the fiddly curtain job done as my fingers had seized up - sound a bit like yours @lizzie27. That will be tomorrow's job.
Signing out for today. Enjoy whatever you have planned for this evening and I'll see you all in the morning.

Evening everyone, I agree about the feel to the temperature, I think it's the damp that's replaced the frost. We've been doing our power of Attorney forms today, after the sudden illness and death of OH'S exe we thought we should do ours, hopefully we will not need them but at least they will be there.
@lizzie27 try cleaning and sharpening your Felcos, it will make a huge difference. If the blade is very bad then a new one will be great, not cheap but cheaper than shelling out for new ones.
See my posts on what are we doing in the garden thread.

@redstar I don't wash our eggs until I want to use them - read that they keep better as washing removes a protective layer. We have 3 hens who are allowed to roam all over the veg plot - 29 x 25 metres including their shed and a polytunnel - and despite their having recently moulted and it being cold and wet, we're getting one or two eggs a day.

I've been painting walls but the only big rollers I have don't fit any of the handles I could find so i gave up and used a small roller for the first coat. Tomorrow I shall buy proper rollers!

Love your photo @Busy-Lizzie. Frost and snow are very pretty if you have the luxury of admiring, rather than battling. I hope your hands free up @lizzie27 and @Ladybird4

I'm cooking duck breasts for dinner. Not our usual Sunday roast but they were on at half price when we did our shopping and got some for the freezer too. No pud.

                Have a cosy evening everyone.

Oh @Busy-Lizzie your reference to the Blackwall Tunnel triggered some memories for me. My Mum and I had to drive through from the South to North of the Thames quite regularly to visit friends who lived on the outskirts of north London. The walls ran with water and drips from the roof rained down on our little car. And there was always the worry that you might meet a large vehicle coming the other way on one of the sharp, narrow corners and get yourself jammed (or be held up by halted traffic due to the fact that a jam ahead of you had already happened. Used to breathe a sigh of relief when we got out into the fresh air at the end. Of course this was many moons ago before the Dartford was ever built/opened, but as a small child the old Blackwall used to freak me out.

Glad to hear that Liam arrived safely, I'm sure he will soon get settled in and make new friends.

Was that before the newer tunnel opened in 1967, @Anna42? They built bends in the first tunnel to stop horses bolting when they saw light. The lanes are narrow but there is a speed limit. The traffic was reasonably slow, but fluid.

When I studied bacteriology during nurse training we were told not to wash eggs, as you said @Obelix-Vendée.

A very good morning to everyone. Very much milder this morning. Do I brace myself to tackle the curtain job or get tempted out into the garden I wonder:scratch: I have never washed an egg, ever.

Good chilly morning everyone!! Lovely picture @Ladybird4

The freeze has arrived and although not as cold as you @Busy-Lizzie it is -1°C but with a wind that makes it feel very very cold. Going to be chilly on this mornings bike ride!!! At least it will warm up the dog!!

I hope you'll have a pleasant day today in spite of the cold - may the sun shine. It's shining here and telling me that I need to clean the windows!!

                          Good morning
No frost on the roofs today, but still feels cold as there’s a slight breeze. It’s still not warm enough to melt the snow that is still lingering in places but I expect it will be gone by the end of the week as it’s forecast to get milder.

I don’t think I would have liked that tunnel one little bit @Anna42.

I’ve never washed an egg either @Ladybird4 .

Good morning all! I'm sorry I've been absent for a few days, but our Internet vanished completely on Thursday afternoon and has only just returned. So I've just been catching up with your news...

So sorry to hear about your helper's bereavement, @Ladybird4 . A shock for you all, even though he had been very unwell. Also commiserations for those suffering aches and pains, not helped by cold and damp. @Goldenlily26 - I agree, keeping Poppy comfortable and happy is the best thing you can do for her. @Busy-Lizzie - how exciting for Liam! But good to know he has you, not too far away, for support should he need it. Happy painting, @Obelix-Vendée !

Last night's minimum temperature was 10.3, such a relief since the heat pump is still not repaired. I've managed to keep the kitchen and living room reasonably warm even when it was minus 5 out, and I've not minded a cold bedroom (2 hot water bottles and 2 quilts on the bed). The plumber is apologetic but still waiting for the part to arrive from Dublin.

I'm also in the "never washed an egg" camp, though sometimes they've needed careful cracking to avoid the odd bit of stuff stuck to the shell.

I've never had to wash a commercial egg but our hens get mucky as they fossick about in the soil, mud and compost heaps and dust bathe in dry bits so sometimes the shells are a bit streaky looking with muck and who knows what on their grubbier shells. A quick rinse suffices.

Bright and sunny today but very cold with a heavy frost to start. Patchwork club today so no gardening.

Glad you've got your connections back @Liriodendron and hope the heating follows soon.

Happy Monday everyone and hugs to all who need one to feel better, be it illness, loss or just frustration with the weather.

@Allotment Boy, sorry, I should have added I clean and sharpen my Felco's regularly and keep a sharpener in my garden jacket pocket.

I rather think I've mistreated them in the past and there's a nick in old blade which can't/won't be smoothed out.

Morning everybody, I wrote the above yesterday but forgot to actually post it and now can't seem to delete it as the conversation has moved on. Sorry.

We had an unexpected frost this morning - most miffed as it wasn't forecast and I had thought it was expected to be warmer today.

Do hope your heating is sorted soon @Liriodendron.

That's understandable @Obelix-Vendée with the eggs from garden chickens. We get through quite a lot now and I like them however they're cooked, got to be runny yolks though!

Hope your cat is feeling better today @Goldenlily26, such a shame.
