Growing at the side of a road with other stuff that looks like it was planted rather than natural.

About 3ft high and the berries have amazing red jammy juice.
Thanks if anyone can help :)

Only guessing and a bit of googling may be required but I would say some kind of sorbus, its a very mixed up bunch and quite few hybrids are around.

Any chance of a pic of the tree itself? A pic of a leaf or bark pattern may help too. From the look of it I'd say some sort of Sorbus too, something like a Pyrenean whitebeam.

which is exactly the same leaves and everything. So well done wiseoldowl :)
I can't believe I never noticed the flowers as I drove past. I have picked the berries hoping I can extract some dye from them-they are so red and juicy!

The Guielder Rose is one of the best decidious hedging plants you can buy and its a native. It has cream/white lace cap flowers in May or June and the leaves colour red with the autumn cold weather adding more interest and has marvellous maple leaf shape and brilliant berries. It can even be planted in boggy conditions. and it can take sun or partial shade. Loved by insects including hover flies

You can pick it up bare rooted for less than £1 so its also a great bargain--order it now!

Oh and it also makes a great garden shrub on its own but there is a garden, smaller variety--off the top of my wooden head--Viburnum Opulus Compactum
