Hi all, how hardy is the Royal Fern in the Uk. I have had mine for over 5 years, which grows in a huge ceramic pot … Over winter I do move into the greenhouse, but I would prefer to plant and grow in a half dappled shady spot I would appreciate your Spruce
Totally hardy, it grows in the wild in many locations. I have had it in my cold garden up North for many years.
I have had three young specimens in a ceramic pot for a number of years now, they are doing fine - I never move it inside. I cannot exclude the possibility that a really severe frost might be damaging (as an exposed pot is a bit different from the wild). However, those young plants basically live in a mini-fen, and have survived frosts down to -8 with a thick layer of ice covering them.
We’ve had a large one in the garden for many years, seems untroubled by winter weather, though the free-draining soil may help.
