Hello.I have taken some seeds from an aubergine that i purchased from Tesco's hoping that i could get some plants from them when they have germinated. However,i am not sure if it would be wiser to buy a packet of seeds or take pot luck with the seeds i have.Aubergines are so expensive to buy that i was hoping to plant my own without too much of a disaster with non-responsive seeds from a Tesco aubergine. :help:

I dont think that is wise because those Aubergines could have come from the tropics. I would recommend you buy the treated seeds in packets.

its not the time to plant aubergine seed now.
You need to wait until next spring.

As to wether supermarket saved seed is OK, I dont know, never tried.
But if you do, it should be regarded as an experiment.:)

I agree with fancy and pete.

Also most commercial aubergines are F1 hybrids which means the seeds won't be true to type.

Much better to splash out on a pack of seeds. I'd recommend 'Ping Tung'.

You'll need a greenhouse, a good summer, and a bit of patience, as it's better start them early (feb-mar) and they fruit late (sept-oct)

    Good luck!

    Nick.

I've just ordered Aubergine moneymaker seeds from Marshalls. They say they will fruit when grown in containers on a sunny patio. Its 30 seeds for £1.85. I thought I'd give it a go next year and if it doesn't work I've only lost £1.85

Road Rage is right, as are the other contributors.

Seed is so cheap now, you'd be silly not to but treated seeds!
