Hi, new member here but enjoying the threads I've read so far!

I've got an issue with one of my espalier apple trees where last year I made a classic mistake of pruning then tying down a new tier which subsequently broke, so now I'm left with no new tier (won't be making that mistake again).

My predicament is what to do in order to get a new tier started again this year. Textbook advice for a new tier is to prune the leader just above the wire of the new tier then wait for new shoots to form a new tier with. However as you can see in the photo, the leader is just below the wire now. It's not so far below the wire that a new tier is impossible but I'm wonder how to prune it now so I get some shoots for a tier this year.

Hopefully there is someone here who has had this issue.

I would wait and see what options nature presents in the coming months. Decisions to be clear by July when fruiting is apparent, and new growth is shaped/shortened to pattern.
