We visited Phoenix recently and spent ages talking to the owner and having a good look round.

He is breeding his own cannas, and has some fantastic cultivars, all virus free and incredibly good looking plants. They are normally open by appointment, or on 'open-weekends' although there are a couple coming up.

Although the prices for cannas are not the cheapest, they are not bad for the size (we bought 4' plants - but many were 6-8' tall) and quality at about £10. They also now do mail order.

Steve - the owner, spent ages showing us round and explaining the process that goes into breeding new cultivars, as well as giving us some insight into the canna virus and how to avoid it.

    Highly recommended :)

Did you make it to the Akamba open weekend, with the BBQ and steal band a week or so back?

CGF is a real gem of a place. Ive only been a couple of times, the first was in a group visit and there were about 10 cars!!! (for those who havent been its down a little farm track with not much space to park). Each time i have been ive come away with loads of plants, so maybe its a good thing is not round the corner for me!! Its a lovely part of the world too!

Tropical Gaz....please tell me what CGF stands for and also where is Akamba.

We have friends in Moreton in Marsh so are often over that way and if these two places are nurseries then I'd like to go and have a look.

Hi Shobhna, sorry missed your message.

CGF is Cotswold Garden Flowers - which despite its rather cutesy name is a superb place for, in particular, unusual perenials. http://www.cgf.net/

Akamba is near birmingham/Solihull, It is a tropical/themed garden centre/nursery, with a totally over the top tropical feel. http://www.akamba.co.uk/

Both are a bit of a treck for me, (at least your that bit nearer in MK) but we go probably twice a year. I normally go on one of the open days Akamba will do for forums (they have done them for HTUK and EPS this year) as they have done discounts & breakfast :) :)
