Just to bring this thread back on to its “I don’t believe it!” theme, rather than “I want to have a moan” theme, here is an article that might ring a few bells with people. I’m just waiting for Ocado to bring my weekly delivery. Last time he brought an entirely wrong order to my door, a delivery for another customer. I luckily spotted it before he’d gone off in his van.

Strangest supermarket substitutions include dog treats instead of steak, poll shows

Anybody got a story of their own?

That is so funny, @Tidemark. When I’ve had an on line delivery, Ive usually ticked the no substitution box, so have missed out on some of these unwelcome surprises. I did once have a substitution on my Waitrose order, but it was just a different, and more expensive version, of what I wanted ( at no extra charge) and the delivery guy brought it to my attention immediately on arrival, so that I had the option to send it back.

Slightly different but I remember seeing something a while back regarding all the suggestions you might want to purchase that you get in places like amazon.
Customers who bought this item also purchased.........etc.
        Some were pretty strange.

During the pandemic, being one of those who were locked fully indoors (clinically medically vulnerable) we placed a Sainsbury's order and they were selling compost, so I bought some to allow me to potter in the garden... they substituted with bags of Evergreen Lawn Weed and Feed.. huge bags (probably because they were similar in size to the compost) and then flatly refused to take them back because of 'infection risk' and that was that. I gave a few of them away and I think I still have most of a bag in the shed.

I have had Tesco weekly shop delivery for over 10 years, and love the substitutions! I tend to buy the cheapest own brand stuff and if it's substituted, I get to sample the posh branded stuff instead. :) (OK, sometimes it is a bit sad when we swoon over Maggi stock cubes... "real Maggi! Imagine that!" :roflol: )

They always substitute for better value so if my three loose bananas are out of stock, I get a large bunch instead.

The worst substitution was when I ordered a 1.5kg bone-in ham to roast, and got two packs of sliced ham instead. Hardly a show stopping centrepiece for a dinner party :heehee:

Anyways, I get the receipt in email once the items have been picked with details of any substitutions, and the driver also asks if they are ok.

If I'm not happy with something, the driver takes it back and scans it off my bill right there. With fresh stuff, they then usually also hand it straight back as it would just go into the bin. :)

Yes the mice look cute, but genetically modifying elephants to be hairier and fatter, so they can endure colder conditions, then releasing 100's in Northern Siberia and Canada to help prevent global warming. That's weird and ethically dubious.
It will come as no surprise that it's an idea from a company in the USA.

No sadly: once they have the genetic modifications "working satisfactorily" in the mice, they will then carry out the same modifications on elephant embryos and implant into female elephants to bring to term.

It actually didn't work very well: the modified mice genes worked and made the mice hairier. However the modified mammoth gene supposed to make the mice fatter didn't function.
As to why somebody did it: essentially a salesman sold the idea to a group of investors who have stumped up something over $200 million.
