I'm ticked with myself for something I didn't do last November. I have metal rodded teepees for my cukes and beans. One leaned over and is at a 30 degree angle from the ground. Did I run out and straighten it? No.

The ground is frozen solid about 10 inches down and I know from experience ot to try to fix it because the last time I did that I bent the metal without even jarring the base.

So I have been seeing this proof of my laziness all winter and possibly another 7 weeks.:doh::doh:

The US doesn't mind billionaire immigrants it's the others they don't want. It was mentioned that they are planning a gold card, instead of a green card, that you can get for $5 million. When asked if russian oligarchs could apply, he'd said "he knew many nice russian oligarchs".

Eggs supposedly went up 41% the other day and they are now selling them separately in some shops because people can't afford to buy them in cartons. I know that's bird flu based but the world has gone completely nuts.

Thanks, @shiney. It is heartening that some justified criticism is being broadcast to the US electorate. Let’s hope lots of them actually watch it.

A bit of our local news, an "open space", (picture of large field), will be planted with 633 trees, to represent the people in the area who died of covid.

In the picture is a councillor, with a spade, standing with saplings planted about 4 ft apart.

First of all it will not be an "open space" if this lot survive, it will just be a thicket, and secondly why do they plant so many trees so close together all the time.

A dozen sizable specimen trees planted sensibly would be much better and people would still be able to use the "open space".

There is a Japanese forest planting method (Miyawaki method) where trees are planted at a high density. The advantage is supposed to be that they mature quickly 30 rather than 200 years.

Somebody on the radio has just been proposing everybody, over a certain age, take a daily polypill to improve cardiovascular health and reduce heart attacks and strokes.
However in the meantime he recommended that everybody, in that age group, should have a yearly health check with their GP.
Good luck with that; I have never been offered a health check with my GP and when I had the cheek to ask about one the reaction was very much why do you want one we're busy.

                      Just looked up Polypill

"A widely distributed polypill could contain three blood pressure medications at low dose: a diuretic, such as hydrochlorothiazide, a beta-blocker such as atenolol, and an ACE inhibitor such as lisinopril; and these could be combined with a statin such as simvastatin, aspirin at a dose of 75 mg, and folic acid, which has been shown to reduce the level of homocysteine in the blood, which is another risk factor for heart disease."

From what little I've read there are concerns about the different combination of drugs (there are different combinations) providing to wide a range of unnecessary ones for individual circumstances.

Other reading says it 'can' reduce the problem by 20%-40% in people that may be prone to cardio vascular disease. That would require a regular thorough check-up. A lot of the medical profession are still sceptical about it although it was originally tested about 20 years ago.

I would prefer to try and eat, drink and exercise in a, fairly, healthy manner than take a cocktail of drugs - but I hate drugs anyway :dunno:

Having had too much Trump on the news again; when is somebody going to explain to him that the USA was never great and that citizens of the USA have never been rich as a group. Some few have been very rich, but the vast majority have been relatively poor and expected to support and protect the rich few.
Yes no different to the real world.

Pete whenever I've seen trees planted in schemes like that most of them die due to lack of water

Well I can't imagine more than about 5% actually reach maturity anyway, the smaller species just get overwhelmed by the bigger ones.

@NigelJ, are you still in the age group for the 40 to 74 adult health check? Should be offered or at least available every five years for anyone without a pre existing condition. Our gp practice is very keen to do them, (I think there is an extra fee claimable) and had squeezed me in before I hit 74 this week! I’ve also had to go into our local Boots a couple of times recently, and every time I went in, I was asked if I’d like to have my MOT! Lots of info on the NHS website, including where you can get one done locally to you.

I get an annual health check but it's because I have a chronic condition (fortunately with fairly mild symptoms most of the time) and they're monitoring for potential complications developing. OH who is a few years older than me hasn't been offered one as far as I know (same GP practice).
