Evening all. Dry and mild here, but the wind was a bit keen... nevertheless I managed to finish pruning the rugosa rose hedge, which is apparently determined to grow as far as possible across the herbaceous border. Then I tackled the collapsed "grow house", whose plastic joiners had snapped, causing the whole thing to end up in a heap. I've retained the staging, which is largely undamaged, so I can use it in the small polytunnel I'll be buying as a replacement. (Actually, it's my birthday tomorrow, and OH has offered to pay for it... so there's more left in the gardening kitty than anticipated, for plants!!)

Finally I cleared a lot of dead stuff out of borders. Still a lot to do, but I can go out to lunch in the rain promised for tomorrow, feeling pleased with progress. :spinning:

Happy birthday for tomorrow, @Liriodendron! All the best people are born in March! (My dearest friend yesterday, and me on Sunday) I am being taken to the garden centre on Sunday to be bought some ( or all) of the things I was shortlisting today!
You’ve got me worried about the two Rosa rugosa I’ve planted in the flower bed outside the kitchen window, I was warned on here at the time but went ahead anyway. I do like them though.

        Thank you, @Ergates !

I love R.rugosa. So healthy, lovely foliage, fabulous scented flowers, huge hips loved by birds... I'm definitely prepared to deal with a bit of thuggery.

Good morning all, busy day today of nanny duty then work. My youngest som and oldest daughter came for tea last night I cooked pizza and salads but hubby ( a chef) did a delicious pasta side dish with ricotta and wild garlic pesto which now means a lot of washing up His food is delicious but the kitchen looks like a bomb site! Got to tackle that before I go to look after Thomas then I am on the counter this afternoon at work what fun!
Graham is eating now ( my tortoise) so I need to peel his cucumber and chop some salad leaves before I go out.
Hoping tomorrow is sunny so I can relax in the garden

Good morning @Debs64 and all to follow. Hope it will not be too busy at work. Glad to hear that Graham is eating, and your dinner sounds tasty, especially pasta.
Here is another sunny and warm morning. Last few days are truly beautiful, so yesterday I went to the cottage. I dug over two fields, which was a mistake because now I can feel every muscles and bones in my body. Luckily it's Friday and we have whole weekend for rest. Will finish my tea and start a day.

Good morning @Debs64, @Ante1 and all popping by soon. Pleased to hear that Graham is now up and about but I guess it is still too early for him to go outside. You meal sounded delicious! @Ante1 - pace yourself, you do not want achey muscles this earlier in the season.

Speaking of rugosa roses. I have a few and they have run everywhere through my garden so they do need an eye keeping on them. Mine are the white ones and are loved by hoverflies when they are fully opened. I am off out today to our first Friday lunch, Bestie is driving to my house then transferring to my car and we will go on to pick up another two friends. Looking forward to that. Last night it absolutely heaved it down with rain so I hope it is drier today.

@Ladybird4 graham presently has the run of the back bedroom as it’s far too cold for him to be outside, it’s always a worry when he wakes up because he won’t eat for 7-10 days so I offer food daily and yesterday he ate cucumber so hopefully all is well.
Your day out sounds like fun. Enjoy!

Happy Birthdays @Ergates @Liriodendron and happy birthday shopping :spinning:

I’ve bought one if those balloon lights for MIL for Mothers Day, they are cute aren’t they?

Two fields sounds like a lot of digging @Ante1 Ive had enough after a bed or two . I think you’ve earned a relaxing weekend

No gardening today for me as I’m working. I did pop out for a while yesterday after our day out. Finally tackled the greenhouse, which looked like a bomb site. Luckily it wasn’t as bad as it looked and a bit of sorting out and editing soon had it ship shape. The final piles of non-GH stuff will disappear soon. Ones a pile of cardboard which will soon be covering some of the new veg garden beds. The other is weed membrane which will be used for the paths.

Hope everyone enjoys their Friday lunches, nanny duty and other activities

Happy birthday @Liriodendron. I planted a rosa rugosa hedge along the boundary between us and an arable field at th eveggie end of our Belgian garden. It grew very well, was fine for one summer then, the next spring, I noticed it spreading and popping up in the veggie bed. The next two winters were hard and it got very straggly and tatty, the rose hips were poor and the shoots still kept popping up where not wanted so I took it all out. Replaced it with a 2m high wire mesh fence of the grid builders use for reinforcing concrete and grew blackberries and loganberries instead, both goof for pollinators and birds but us too.

We have a drismal start to the day with wet air. However, it's clearing and should get warm this pm. CH engineer this morning and veggie plot this pm.

I agree @Ante1. Pace yourself so you can get more done more slowly and not lose time resting and healing. Undesrtand your getting carried away tho.

Enjoy your lunch @Ladybird4. Your pasta sounds lovely @Debs64 but have to say I'm not keen on pizza. I'd rather have cheese or devilled kidneys or mushroom on toast.

Have fun to those minding little ones, gardening or going out to play and hope work is fun too for those who have to.

                      Morning from a wet Wales.
                      Happy birthday @Liriodendron
There was a beautiful rugosa hedge alongside the entrance to the caravan site, but last year it grew so much, it obcured the view of the road from our exit. I reported it as a safety hazard. They got rid of it completely during the site closure. Much safer, but still sad.
                      Home after lunch.
Enjoy your day and go easy on the digging!

                        Morning all.
                        Happy Birthday @Liriodendron

You dug two fields @Ante1, good gracious!!! No wonder your muscles are sore, you'd better have a long rest.

Our forecast is for showers this morning and does look a bit iffy out there, hope the sun does come out though.

The neighbours had a native rose take root in their hedge near our boundary and the flowers were such a pretty pale pink I let it be. Probably a sad mistake as it's growing with a vengeance this spring. Might have to lean over and cut it back before it gets well out of hand.

Yesterday I did a stint in my son's garden, weeded and generally tidied up which didn't take that long. They only have two small flower beds, they don't have the time nor inclination to garden much.
DIl is taking us out for lunch at a beachside restaurant later, looking forward to that.

                        Have a good Friday all.

CH fixed. We have a new "gicleur" which controls the flow of fuel and he's reduced the airflow and cleaned out some crud - all this because OH bought "supérieur" fuel last time and didn't realise we'd need to re-tune the motor.

In order to be handy while all this went on I have started cutting out an underdress - sort of like a petticoat to wear under light summer dresses and made from fine cotton with a broderie anglaise border. I shall finish that before lunch and then go and play with shallots. The sun is fighting thru.

I grew my rosa rugosa hedge from seed I picked in a town car park. It's fine in sheltered spaces where it can't escape but not in open beds, fertile soil and lethal winters.

Hope you and the dogs have had a good time @Penny_Forthem

Good morning and thanks for all the birthday greetings!

We are going out for lunch too, and the promised rain hasn't yet arrived... fingers crossed it will still be dry when we get back. There's masses to do in the garden, but I can't do a full day out there any more. Bits of me still ache after yesterday's gardening blitz - bits which never caused me a moment's thought when I was young. Anyway, I'm not really complaining, because I can still do most things in the garden, given time. This morning I've had to stay clean!!

Good news re the heating, @Obelix-Vendée . And congratulations on all that digging, @Ante1 !

My rugosa roses were also grown from seed, collected from the rose hedge in our Todmorden garden. We were very fortunate to move here before Brexit, so I could bring lots of plants and seeds with me.

                            Right - time to leave...
