My employer pays for private health for me and my wife, but in all the years I've had the benefit, it's only been used once - by my wife.

My own conditions have been dealt with by the NHS, and satisfactorily too.

But I never know when it might come in handy.

@katecat58 Not in my experience. I had surgery as a private patient some years ago at the same hospital where I had an NHS hip replacement. There was an in-depth questionnaire before any conversation about the actual surgery. A high risk patient would be a high risk patient whether they were an NHS referral or a private patient. No hospital with any sense without the proper facilities would risk such an operation.

Same here. When I was in pre-op for my cataract surgery (yes a minor procedure), the anaesthesist did a long interview regarding my health. Have I taken my blood pressure meds? Is my blood sugar still a bit high? to which I replied that I never had any bp issues, no high sugar, nothing.

Turns out she was given the wrong file! :hate-shocked:

So I'm glad of any questions they ask to verify why I'm there and what I do or do not need!

Every time I’ve had anything done involving a general anaesthetic, I’ve had extensive pre op tests to check everything was ok. On the morning of my last surgery, I was quizzed at least four times by different members of the team as to what surgery I was having done, including on the table before being put to sleep. Hard work as it all had very complicated and lengthy names, which even I struggled to pronounce.
By that stage, I’d confirmed my date of birth so many times that it had started to sound wrong, even to me. I finally resorted to layman’s terms, ie having X hitched up and stapled to another part of the body, and the now redundant Y removed. It raised a laugh with the surgeon, but I think left them reassured that I knew exactly what I was having done!

My MIL was sent by the NHS to a private hospital in Perth (Scotland)
She was picked up at home in a private car, at a great time ie:- noon
driven the half hour drive to the hospital and given a private room, ready for a hip replacement the next morning, The room had TV, Radio, central heating, and meals were al a'carte including wine, The operation went well but she was kept in a week for recovery and physio, Then a private car back to her home

My wife at the time was on her Third hip replacement, We had to get ourselves to the NHS Princess Margaret hospital in Edinburgh for 08:00, on arrival at 07:35 we took a seat and met the Surgeon at 11:30, Who explained that surgery would be three days later on the Thursday and be at the hopspital nil food or drink for 08:00, so we drove home, spent a couple of nights there and set off again at 07:00 in the morning to the NHS Princess Margaret Rose again arrivbing around 07:45, She was taken in at 09:00 and was operated on around teatime, she was starving
I arrived for my visit time and (no mobile phones then) had to go again to get her a meal
the NHS offering was inedible, I got back with fish n chips,
on the Saturday (2 days later) I was to pick her up and bring her home, only I had to have lots of pillows in the car with the passenger seat reclined

I won't go on but the end result was an epidural during the op destroyed the nerves in that leg
                and she can not walk

I really don't trust those injections in the back, it's often ages before some of the feeling comes back to certain areas.
Having had some back surgery it's always a worry.

Is there any chance of your wife's leg getting working again, @Jack McHammocklashing .

                    Only a slight moan.

I've received an email from the local authority saying that I need to renew my application to receive a postal vote at least every four years and sign the form so that they can verify any change in my signature and that I am the correct person making the vote.

It brings up a number of thoughts/questions:-
One part of the email says that I can click on the link to download the application form or if I don't have internet can phone the number they put in that email .

Apart from the silly bit sending me an email saying 'if I don't have internet' - if I was someone wanting to use my vote instead of me then any reasonably close form of the signature would obviously be accepted (I know that my signature never comes out the same each time :noidea:) so a person wanting to use it should be able to do it.

The other thing is, why send it out now when they have notified us that this year's local elections have been cancelled and it is only two years since I filled in the last form.

I don't know if it's true or just urban myth. Somebody did claim that an e-mail from a council included "If you don't receive this message, please call xxxxxxx". Sadly, I can believe it's true.

My wife used to send 20 or 30 Christmas cards and a dozen or more birthday cards, excluding family members. Last year she sent about 10 Christmas cards and maybe a handful of birthday cards. That number will drop even further now.
