I think it might mark the end of Royal Mail.
Its mostly junk mail that keeps them afloat.

      I thought it was 2.5hrs 5 days a week.
      atio
OK not council but I've seen workmen working for the housing association around here and they start at about 9 and are going by 2.30, every day.
      How can that be right?
I think the council office workers probably are mostly part time anyway.
But its good for their work life balance and overall mental health I suppose.;)

Royal Mail 2nd class is 85p. We use it online, print the label and it gets picked up by the postman. We also use Royal Mail 48 for parcels (mainly sell books) and those are also picked up by the postman the next day.

When we viewed this house, there was no sign of the dreaded Spanish bluebells in the garden. Okay, so it WAS September.
Last year there were the odd one or two. Now that I have removed several trees and large shrubs, and reduced others, I suddenly find the place engulfed in the darn things!!
They are overrunning the raspberry patch, and appearing in so many unwanted locations.
I blame whoever had the stupidity to introduce them to this country!!

The English ones are as bad for spreading, I was looking at the leaves coming through today and thinking I'll have to get rid of sum of those.

Oh yes, the annual spanish-bluebell-hoiking-out season is almost upon us.

I don't know what is better - to pull them up before they flower (and miss the splashes of colour) or wait until they have flowered, and risk them spreading!!

I dug some bulbs out last year, while I was trying to eradicate the pink Japanese anemones. I think I was unsuccessful on both accounts, but leaning towards having greater success with the Japanese anemones, strangely.

We have been trying to eliminate the beautiful Nectaroscordum siculum (Allium) for some years. They're a lovely flower but seed much too freely as well as producing baby bulbs underground.

We were managing to keep them under control and sold hundreds of them over the years (all with a warning about them spreading) but during covid with no visitors and us being a bit lax they escaped. They now cover the grass verge across the road and despite us digging out what we can they have laughed at us and run away along the banks of the ditch. We try to reach what we can with a long handled strimmer but they are going to take over the world.

I'm sure that in the night I can hear them laughing

We are just about managing to control them in the garden :fingers crossed:

I think I've got rid of N siculum, but I know a verge and a ditch that's absolutely packed with the stuff.
If you want a better mannered and better looking Nectaroscordum then I would recommend N tripedale; less common, not as cheap, but less vigorous and it's flowers look straight out rather than drooping. The tripedale is because the flower stalk is always around 3 ft tall.

The workmen may only be on-site from 9am and leave at 2.30, that doesn't mean that is the extent of their working day. Equipment and materials may have to be collected from a depot each day, and the van returned and unloaded at the end of the day.

They may possibly be doing as you say but not every day and not all of them all the time.
I used to do some work on site and even travelling to London you were expected on site by 8 am and you never left before 4pm.
Hour and a half travelling minimum each way.

@shiney and @NigelJ I love nectaroscordum. It's beautiful in flower and as seedheads and behaved well in my Belgian garden. Haven't managed it here yet but would be happy for it sto spread freely. I'va only ever had well behaved Japanes anemone too and am doing my best to get it growing happily here.

With me Japanese Anemones tend to become rampant thugs once comfortable.
Any bulb thrown in as a free gift with an order will be something that bulks up and or self seeds happily, so a potential problem. The same goes for the cheap packs of 100 assorted bulbs where 40 to 60 are the same variety, that one should be planted somewhere where it can be controlled or exterminated.

I love nectaroscordum too but they don't do particularly well here, and they certainly don't spread. I think they probably prefer more moisture. Same with Japanese anemone, although I only have the white one, Honorine Jobert.
