Forced myself to do a bit of housework this morning, dangling the carrot of an afternoon free to be in the garden. However, milliseconds before I step outside, a neighbour starts with the pressure washing! She’s a bit of an enthusiast, and almost every summer weekend indulges her passion for a couple of hrs, always starting up at around noon.

Humpf! Will just have to hope the winter lay-off means she’s out of condition and can only keep going for an hr or so!

Can't do that here @ViewAhead. No noisy outdoor machinery between 8pm and 8am any day and not between midday and 2pm either. Saturdays it's noon till 3pm and not after 6pm. Sundays only between 10 and noon. Same in Belgium and stricter in Germany where no indoor DIY is allowed in those periods.

It's all about respect for neighbours and time to relax quietly.

I wish we had such laws here. All week, and Saturday till 1 pm, we have machinery noise from the very near-by building site. A little peace on a Sunday is a precious oasis.

My neighbour once did that on a Sunday, starting ant 9.00 am, after a full day of it the day before. I told him that Sunday was a day of rest and he has never done it again :nonofinger:. These people need to be told, in the nicest possible way .

I dont mind pressure washers but I draw the line at barbeques, smoke everywhere, music and lots of talking late into the evening on warm nights.
Petrol pressure washers like my neighbour uses to wash his car are noisy, but the same as mowers TBH.

When we first moved into our current house, 37 years ago, our neighbour never seemed to start any noisy DIY until late evening. Thankfully he didn't do it very often as hearing the telly over the sound of a hammer drill isn't easy.
He is a nice guy, but has some odd habits. He never used to mow his lawn until late evening. I reckon it was so the grass couldn't see the mower coming.

@Jiffy the rules don't apply to farm machinery and activity but ours do tend to be respectful of neighbours.

Thought you were talking about me :heehee:

I've done about 15 hours of it in the last few days (still quite a few hours to go) but always check with neighbours first. It's not a problem at the moment as the neighbour one side is deaf and those the other side have moved out for a few weeks whilst they have builders in although I always check with them first.

The builders don't work weekends, have been told not to have their radio on loud (I only had to have a word with the builders the first day they started) and do some quieter work if we have something going on here that needs a short quiet time (usually just whilst Mrs Shiney has a patient).

The sound of mowers around here are an accepted noise any day of the week - including Sundays. Farmers working the fields are the same. At this time of year it takes us a week or two to get used to the bird scaring canons going off in the fields and then we hardly notice.

We, nowadays, don't get too much problem with the smell when the farmers are muck spreading as they tend to dig it in the following day. In the old days it just used to be left on the surface.

Sent in an email by a friend in November 2016 and just spotted by me as I was looking back, trying to recall something about them from that time.

Nine years have gone by and what has changed?

Our old neighbour was obsessed with chopping wood with a chainsaw. He had a supply that could have gotten a small country through a long winter. Unfortunately he was a fair weather lumber jack and only did it when you either wanted to be outside or have the windows open. He did it in an area that amplified the noise as well.

A new neighbour is in the process of demolishing their front and sidewall to replace. He has a big jack hammer to do the work but unfortunately isn't particularly hard working, so instead of it taking a couple of hours he has strung it out, mainly by sitting looking at his phone most of the time, annoying everyone for one weekend so far.

I knew you would have planned your pressure washing considerately @shiney. I usually do mine when my neighbours are out, unless the loud voiced one at the back is in his garden, talking to Barry on his mobile phone :heehee:.

What sort of pressure washers are people using if noise, I'm assuming the concern is about noise, is an issue. I can easily hold a conversation over the sound of mine when in use.
