    hi there everyone!
i have just finnished my first year with a vegetale garden. ive never done any sort of gardening in my life so it was all new to me! i live in a tenement in glasgw and got my 3 neighbours to agree to me getting rid of a large area of red chuckies in order for me to start growing vegetables. the soil that revealed itself under the chuckies was waterlogged and full of clay! so i got soil improver for clay soils, and alot of compost and dug it all in. then i planted potatoes, peas, onions, carrots, garlic, sweetcorn and brussel sprouts. well, the potatoes didnt flower, then started to go yellow and wilt, so i dug them up and was surprised to find quite alot of 2-3" tasty pots. the peas were excelent, hundreds of them, very tasty too! onions seemed to stop growing at about 2" in diameter. the carrots were the wiedest shapes ive ever seen! the fox dug up all my garlic, sweetcorn seemed to stop growing at about 3 foot then the wind blew it all over, leaving me with brussels which, over the past 2-3 weeks, have been massacred by catterpillers!! what a learning curve!!!
so, what do i do for next year? oh, ive dug in alot of well rotted manure now. any tips or advice on what to grow would be extremely appreciated!

If you have already dug in the manure you will have to leave the "Root" crops out of the list for a year (2 would be better) so you can rotate the veg you grow.

This means you shouldn't grow Beetroot, Carrot, Chicory, Artichoke, Parnsip, Potato, Salisy etc.

You should use a 3 year cycle - it avoids depleting nutrients and the build up of disease in the soil.

    Year 1 -
    Area 1-Root crops
    Area 2 - Brassicas
    Area 3 - Others

    Year 2 -
    Area 1 - Others
    Area 2 - Roots
    Area 3 - Brassicas

    Year 3 -
    Area 1 - Brassicas
    Area 2 - Others
    Area 3 - Roots

Year 4 - As year 1 ..... and so on.

An excellent book "The Vegatable & Herb Expert" by D G Hessayon. I think it's in print.

    Hope this helps.

Hello & welcome, what Chas said sounds really good, the Veg & Herb Expert is The Bible and its pretty cheap (I got mine from B&Q).

    But what are Red Chuckies?
