Carl, no matter how much money you throw at solving world poverty or animal cruelty it is a fact of life that they will always be with us. However, there is no telling what doors these experiments will open for the future - could be cures for all sorts of problems in the world today. You are being very niave but then you are young and have a lot of worldly experiences to undergo before you learn that you cannot cure all problems by throwing money at them. If you could there would be no famine in Africa the amount of money that has been thrown that way. Makes the money spent on this experiment look small. You have to solve the cause of the problem, not the problem and experiments like this show the way. That's my humble opinion.

You make a good point Carl, lots of people are of the same opinion as you and agree that
it seems wicked to spend all this money when it is needed elswhere in the world.

Thank Heavens we have enlightened and educated people who are prepared to invest in the future.

I am not saying that people should be allowed to starve to death-it is shameful that it happens, but throwing money at them won`t help, political change in home policy and foreign policy must occur before we can bring an end to world poverty-but that`s a whole other kettle of fish so to keep to the point, it is essential that the experiment continues, as are all those experiments that will further our understanding, otherwise we would still be blowing on seeds to tell the time.

Aye we can't solve the problems by throwing money at them, remember that we would have enough food for the whole planet if we just stopped growing tobacco and grew food in its place :runs for cover:

No argument from me John, I fully agree. And also what happens if they learn how to harness the energy created in the chamber?

The project as cost near to 6 billion this country has contributed 700 million the spin off from this project will be enormous, Carl you obviously need to do a little more research before you pontificate about what the tax payers money is spent on ,nothing to stop you doing some charity work or giving some of your hard earned giro to to these good causes.

I worked hard all my life full time, even after having my children to earn a pittance of a pension, that is now taxed by this so called working man's government. I for one would prefer that my tax go towards science and technology that will improve the world than to some people who have never had and never intend to have a job in their life..............and that is not personally aimed at you Carl because you are going to college to better yourself, and I hope you succeed.

I'm glad someone else know what's going on! Theories are it can't even create black holes, and even if it did, a black whole would need a mass greater than our sun to self sustain itself with the matter from around it, any smaller and it simply evaporates.
For some reason the media decided to pick up on all the doomsaying and not the facts ;)

As per usual Plantlife on the media thing, I started the thread thinking that was a given, but fear unfortunately throws us all a blinder from time to time. I`m not saying I understand it all, but the general idea I do get.

Still the prospects of the experiments are very exciting and can have quite wonderful things in store for the future, if not mine (which I am tightly crossing my fingers for-pppllleeeaaassseee I want to go into space), then perhaps my childrens.

I think maybe the media has overdone the doomsday bit.
I had an elderly friend ring me this morning. She lives on her own
and had hardly slept last night she was so worried and was waiting
for 8.30 this morning in fear and trepidation.

    Although I quip...

It's not actually real money as you and I know it. The outlay is startling, but in reality that money will have supported a great many economies and revenue streams. These will have directly or indirectly contributed to the world economy in a positive way :)
On a Macro level the numbers are insignificant but as we all like to look at things on a micro level they often seem unbalanced with what we believe to be right and wrong.

On a macro level I think quite differently about political and social issues compared to how I view them as individuals.:thumb:Politicians have the same dilemma :)

Part of the LHC tecnolodgy has been usefull in the development of medical scaners (PET scans), so hardly a waste of money.

It cracks me up that there are people ignorant enough to get woried about a carefully planned scientific experiment....... Black holes..... maybeee but on a micro scale.

Whats this got to do with unnemployment or poverty????

Paul, You are wrong to laugh at people for that, I could have an indepth discussion about lexicography, grammatical structure-I can use words that frankly could blind the layman and talk about their origins, their uses, their history.

If you don`t understand that conversation because I have dressed it up in technical terms, it doesn`t make you ignorant-at least not how you mean it. It make you unlearned, and there is a very big difference.

There is however a differance though between flowery eloquence and a hysterical reaction.
