A robin has decided to set up home in a box in our car port. Our car port has never had a car in it. We have lots of pots of plants and boxes, compost bags, buckets, tools etc.

This is a partial view and the black sheet against the wall is just one of four that we normally just lay on top of the boxes and put them across the patio when we have muddy shoes. It wasn't until I had removed the other three that I saw the robin sitting on the fence behind me with a mouth full of moss and little twigs. So I quickly moved away to see where he was going.

You can see a small blue box on top of what is a large green box that is mainly hidden by the blue one. That is because I saw the partially constructed nest in the corner of the green box and stuck the blue box over it to give the nest some cover.

View from the other side. The blue box has a doorway for the robin to fly through.

View through the doorway. I hoped the robin wouldn't have been put off by me being near the potential nest as the robins in the garden know me quite well.

When I had finished putting the lid with the doorway on top of the nest I saw he was keeping an eye on me

He has now gone back to building the nest and I shall be putting a sign up to warn visitors to go quietly past it.

This is the seventh robin nest in the garden that I have spotted. That's about the normal number for our garden.

First two House Martins over the house this morning. Just prospecting - they'll be feeding over water a few miles away and won't return to nest for a while yet. Earliest date I've recorded since we've lived here.

A male green woodpecker in the orchard opposite the kitchen window for a long time. Pulling at the grass supposedly to get at the ants. Orange tip and holly blue buzzing all over. One swallow overhead and 2 buzzards soaring and mewing and then mobbed by the crows. A blackbird has been keeping us entertained virtually all day with his singing.

Heard my first hoopoe today and disturbed one fossicking for ants in our drive. The wisteria is just starting to open up and is buzzing with bees of various sizes inclduing the biggest all black carpenter bee I've ever seen here.

Saw my first swallows at the weekend and heard my first cuckoo. Now I need to learn to identify all the little brown jobs, both local and migratory.

There has been an unprecedented influx of Hoopoes here and Ireland, good number in Devon and Cornwall, possibly around 50+.

Little Ringed Plover, a summer visitor passing through unlike our resident Ringed Plovers.

Saw my first Redstart of the season today. Quite early this year due to the settled weather. This male gave me the run-around before I finally got the binoculars on him while he belted out his song from the top of a tree. Old image - sorry!

We had two Canada geese in our road. One sailed past our bedroom window - it was huge. Then it landed on a bungalow's roof 4 doors away. Its mate flew past and missed the roof, ending up on the road. There was a lot of noise - like ducks on megaphones. Then off they went. Some years ago they were a nuisance on the golf course, pooping all over the place. They disappeared for some years and are now back.

Captured entirely by accident when taking a picture of my daffodils. I didn't spot the lacewing tucked up in the petals at the time!
