Def not eggs *shivers at the thought*, haven't cut them in half. I'll get a bunch from my daughter next time I see her and I'll cut it in half.
Don't think it's a dahlia. She moved in last June, and no flowers of any shape or form have grown in her garden.:(

    oh dear Moira
My heart goes out to your daughter, the ground looks awful, she has a lot of hard work in front of her inside and out,:help:
We have i am sure all struggled at some time in our early days and you will both look back and wonder how you managed,
With the ground being so bad there may be lots of things just waiting to shine with a little encouragement,d-yy
I hope we solve the puzzle and put a name to your mystery  please be sure to keep us updated with lots of photos of your daughters progress it will make a visual diary for her when she gets tired.

If the smaller version is like little yellow eggs it's a pest of a weed of which I don't know the name. It grows in little clumps in the spring and then dies back. It spreads like nobody's business. A real pain. Don't know what the other one is though

It's nothing I recognise, like dahlias, gladioli or any other roots/corms. I think you'll have to wait and see - keep an eye on it.
That looks like a serious plot to be renovated, but a blank canvas to work on, which means lots of possibilities. Dig it over, puts lots of compost and manure in ready for next Spring. Then you can get cracking with the plantings. Are you going for flowers, veggies, or a mixture of both?

    Good Luck.

I don't recall the smaller version being yellow granny, I think they were browny with a pinky tinge
