Hi folks. I'd like a tree recommendation please. Something that wont grow too big. One type that springs to mind is an Acer, but is there one that fits the bill ? I don't want one of those small types (way too expensive and slow growing). Cheers...freddy.

Depends on how big you want it to grow, Freddy. But a very nice one is Acer Brilliantissima.:thumb:

Again as Dai says it does depend on what you wish for-and small is a bit relative-how large a foliage are you wanting? And ow tall do you require?

A lilac tree, can shape it nice. Witchhazel can be shaped into a tree. Some larger shrubs can be shaped into a tree, make sure they come out of one trunk. So what you really want is an object so high, so wide, do you really want a tree then? or a large shrub shaped like a tree? Some of these grow 15 foot tall and the width depends on what you chose, when you chose the shrub.

Hi. I've just looked at Acer Brilliantissima. It seems it's quite slow growing AND prefers partial shade. I should have mentioned, it will be in quite a sunny spot. I guess I'd like something that will reach maybe 6ft in a couple of years. I guess the eventual height doesn't matter TOO much but I certainly wouldn't want a monster ! BTW, Acer Brilliantissima looks like a fab tree, but doesn't really fit the bill, apparently. Acers have such wonderful leaves. Cheers...freddy.

If you want an acer take a look at Acer pensylvanicum - Green or Striped Bark Maple. Pretty and well behaved

Hi redstar. I'm not a fan of Lilac trees. The foliage (imo) is a bit...uninspiring, sorry :) I take your point about the shrub thing though.Maybe I'll look into that, but it seems to me that an Acer is what I want, just need to find the right one (if there IS such a thing). Cheers...freddy.

Hi Hedgeman. Acer Pensylvanicum doesn't have the right leaves, sorry :) (Sorry if I seem to be making this up as I go along folks, but I guess I am :)) The acers I like have those feathery/cut leaves. Thanks again. Cheers...freddy.

Look under Member's Gallery---then down a little to Redstar Gardens.

Slow growing, I would google and check. However, I think they could only give a range of growth per year, because it depends on soil, rain, climate etc.

An apple tree. They are as pretty as cherries in spring, you can fetch an apple while you garden (apples from the supermarket are pretty boring fruit, but for some reason an unwashed apple right off the tree is just divine), plus you have the apple pie.

We have five apple trees in the garden, I enjoy their company very much. We picked the apples from one of them today for a pie. Those on the ground, with some blemish We threw over the fence to the cows. They are very funny, staring at you unmoving, you think they are not minding you at all, but when the apple goes *flop* on the grass they run for it.

Well, I just like these apple trees :D

Ivory, thanks for the suggestion but I already have 2 apple trees. What I'm wanting is something more...decorative. Cheers...freddy.
