Being a newbie I have been looking through the site and old posts etc.

When looking through the members lists, the purpose of which was to look at other peoples picture albums.

It is so full of members who have never posted for years, and I just wondered if it would be a good idea to archive or remove these listsings.

    Just a thought.

It's not common practice to do this. They are still members no matter how long it is since they last posted. There are stats on the bottom of the Home Page which show how many Currently Active Users we have, meaning how many have posted within the last 3 months.

Removing "inactive members" is also a lot of work.
I belong to a messageboard devoted to the saxophone, run by a music shop in Las Vegas. There are only five and a half thousand active members but there are over 36,000 registered.
I've just checked and there's over a thousand presently on-line and it's only ten o'clock in the morning over there.
But then there's a lot of out of work musicians.

Hmmm... Jan not something we practice here or on any other forum I am a member of, but it does tell you if the person is an active member before you click on their profile anyway so you don't waste your time looking to see if they have albums, but allot of us still use photobucket & other free hosting sites & the like, so don't have big albums anyway....
As you probably know also some members come & go several times during the year so not as active as us lot.... I have a friend who only visits once a year, lots of times then, but only at that certain time, but he would be mortified if we deleted him... !!

One of if not the most important part of SEO is web content. If GC deleted the old members and there posts the site/forums content would be dramatically reduced there for knocking GC down in the google (there are other search engine's available) rankings.

As a forum owner my self I know the importance of content and member count from a commercial point of view so under stand EVER member is valuable whether they are active posters or not.

I can't see the point in deleting old members. It's extra work for GC's admin/mods and for what end purpose? Anyway what happens if an old member decides to come back?

Some of the old posts from long gone members might still be useful on here, removing them would not be good.

This week I went back onto an old car forum I hadn't visited since 2002 because I've suddenly found interest in them again. Whilst it wouldn't have been a disaster if they had deleted me it would have been a little annoying.

    Digressing..

On the subject of joining or leaving boards.

Here's an opportunity for an old Groucho Marx joke.

"I wouldn't want to belong to a messageboard that'd have me as a member!"

I think they were a bit before their time, his comment was really about the snobbery of some mens' clubs, wasn't it?
