I have been obsessed with gardening for 26 years and I'm only 35! I would be a gardener by profession if it wasn't for the stupidly high public libability insurance. When I were a lad, when somebody stood on a folk and received a clout across the face, we all laughed...now, where theres blame theres a claim!

I think that gardening is the nearest thing to Godliness. Talk about 'hovering over the face of the waters'. Okay, I don't have a pond, but I do hover over my flowers and vegetables with a sence of serenity. An unbeatable feeling. I'm sure that gardening could possibly be the cure for many of our social ills.

I hope that answers your question ;)

In part I work as a selfemployed profeshional gardener/ groundsmantance contractor hence my user name.

Regards insurance, Not that prohibitve, Off the top of my head I pay £600 ish but this covers me for landscaping, minor excavation, cheerypickers, Jet washing, property repairs and tree work up to 17 m.

Your insurance cost should be coverd by your charges, should of course calculate this in a business plan. Try a broker not a specific firm.

Oh, Paul, for the leaves, we have: a tractor/lawn mower which pulls an enclosed 5 foot by 8 foot trailer that has a vacume hose from the tractor to the box sucking the cut up leaves into the box, when the box is filled it is then taken down to the woods and dumped. We still have a huge pile from last year that has not broken down yet. That pile is probably 15 foot by 15 foot and up to my waist at the highest point.
But the tractor can only be used on the lawn area. Now for the many gardens. There is the huge pull tarps I have, and I rake the leaves out of the gardens on the tarp. I can get a pile on that tarp about shoulder high then the tarp is dragged down to the same area for dumping, to dump you climb up the leaf pile pulling the heavy weight (lighter if leaves are dry--if wet--good luck). up on to the pile turning the huge tarp over on to the pile. When I am into this area, I tell myself, I will do 8 tarps today, so I can go and do something else. Then we have the leaf blower to get things out of hard to reach places. Last year I had a landscaper come over to estimate the cost of leaf removal, not the gardens---only the open lawn area, his price was $800.00. Each season I advertise for some person, and will pay them $8.00 an hour to rake. We are raking clean into January sometimes. In my front yard alone I have 22 180 ft tall trees. Some days I pray that one will die, so I can take it down. But when all is cleaned up it does look nice. By the way the billy goat vac. you mentioned would burn out in one hour, and my leaves would laugh at it. If we don't touch our leaves until end of October and you walk through the front lawn the leaves are mid calf in height. Its fun.

Its a hobby for me and a form of relaxation. On a good day I can garden from 9am till 6pm on just a sandwich and a few glasses of water. At the end of it I dont feel tired as if Ive done a days work, but rather a day of enjoyment where I feel totally chilled, relaxed and content.:) 02

:) I love my garden and gardening ,also the pleasure of watching the seasonal changes in it.... I wonder if gardening for a living would make it a chore instead
