    Good afternoon.

I am after recommendations for electric strimmers.

A bit of background. Since the plastic housing for the spool gave out on my basic B&D strimmer bought for about £30 in 2006 I have been through 5 strimmers this summer.

The first was a Homebase own brand one. I gave up on this after 2 uses because the line wouldnâ??t feed and kept snagging up inside the cartridge.

I then replaced this with a Flymo Contour. Similar problems and also couldnâ??t get on with the guide wheel which is designed for right-handed use â?? I am left-handed.

Then swapped this for a B&D GL720. The line on this snagged and tangled on first use before Iâ??d even lowered it onto the border! I kept re-feeding it but it just wouldnâ??t feed correctly. Replaced it with a like-for-like and this ran OK for 3 weeks when the same thing happened.

So finally today replaced this with a Bosch Accutrim and guess what. Within 15 minutes the dual-line feed wrapped itself up inside the cartridge and after winding it back on it refuses to autofeed. Notwithstanding this the rather flimsy spool holder shows signs of wear and fatigue after having been removed and replaced 4 or 5 times already.

I had few problems with my first strimmer but the subsequent ones I have had seem to have inherent problems with the autofeed. I am sure I am following the instructions on setting the line up correctly. The returns desk at B&Q must think Iâ??m taking the p!

    Can anyone suggest a model I might have better luck with? I maintain 2 lawn borders â?? ours is 30m x 10m, the mother-in-lawâ??s is 40m x 12m. I want electric, mains-powered without wheels.

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you are having the worst luck! I bought a cheapo battery operated one (no good to you as you want mains operated) and it has been superb, no snags, feeds well and keeps its charge; I'm expecting it to last me about 5 years or so.
Pro will probably set you straight with a decent recommendation soon...

My advice is to get a small petrol stihl.

However I know stihl make electric strimmers marketed as 'viking' worth a look perhaps. The stihl auto feed on an electric is likely to use the same desighn features as the larger petrol machine which work well.

Try one that uses plastic blades rather than line, they are far less bother

I have never had much luck with electric ones . I don't have much use for strimmer but I cannot re wind the nylon for anything - I have to get some one else to do it.

    Thanks all.

After asking here and around various suppliers, friends and relatives I have pushed the boat out and gone for a Ryobi Petrol Strimmer (my brother-in-law has been using one trouble free for 5 years).

It arrives today. Weather permitting I hope to use it this weekend.

    I'll report back! :thumb:

You`ll wonder why you didn`t buy one before.
In the time it took to unroll the mains cable... you`ll have it all done :)
Don`t forget to use good eye protection.
