...So! It begins. We are to be issued with wheelie bins for recycling and non-recycling plus a Food waste bin in early 2009.
The accompanying note reads..."Due to the significant cost of composting the food waste:confused: we can only compost food waste on the week that we collect your recycling green bin in a specialist vehicle. The week your non-recycling grey bin is collected the same vehicle will take your food waste and it will be sent to landfill,as currently happens"

....So why can't we empty the food waste into that bin and save the cost of the specialist vehicle on that week that we do NOT have yet anyway?????????????

Pal as from the end of next month we will be on our 3rd paper bin, we have had 2 that didnt work...the third one now becomes the plastic/paper/glass bin, we still have the regular black general rubbish and then the 3rd green bin for garden waste. They all ALL wheelie bin size .... just wait til they ask you to wash all containers before you bin them. Its been suggested in other areas that you wash bottles/containers out with hot water......Whats the bloody sense in that, its hardly green to waste perfectly good purified clean water that has just cost u a bloody fortune to heat as energy prices are set to go skywards. Would be interesting to find out where OUR green waste goes to. Do you know??/

Oh yeah, we have to wash our tins and bottles before we bin them. No lids on plastic bottles either. If our bin lid isn't completely closed it won't be emptied. Our green bin is for household waste and the black one for recycling:rolleyes::rolleyes:
The nightmare begins when I have visitors who haven't a clue how my rubbish "system" works and I am like an idiot sorting out the bins.:(
Our council have been doing fortnightly collections for years. Oh yeah, the recycling one won't be emptied if a none recyclable item is spotted in it.

Ditto here, I'm in a flat at the moment and forever taking other peoples waste out of my household bin and putting in my recycling one. We are only 6 flats and have 12 wheelies cluttering our yard

Where I am moving to they are of the 'if the lid isn't shut, fine them' mentality, that said when I rang to order two subsidised compost bins I found I got one free, so I guess that compensates a bit.

Here in York the City is proud of its recycling schemes and has been for many years and is among the best in the country........ We have two weelie bins. black for land fill and green for composting.
We also have one box for glass and plastics. One large bag for cardboard and also one large bag for paper..
Empty bottles/tins are washed in the washing up water once everything else is washed up, So no extra water usage there..
Every two weeks all recycled stuff is picked up. Usually a dirty great wagon comes down the street first for the green bin, followed by another dirty great big wagon with lads to load up with the paper/cardboard/tins/glass/ and plastic.
The guys are very helpfull to one or two of the old folk in our cal.de.sac who may sometimes get it wrong!
I have never had anything refused.
And as far as food waste going a bit off in the bin over the two week period.
Not a problem.. we dont have any..
Oh yes. food wrappings like what covers chickens is also washed in the last of the washing up water before popping in the kitchen waste bin. Therefore, no smells.. I must admit it is possible easy as there is only two of us..
Are we good... or are we good...

Two concerns that I have heard raised were
    1. Our recycled waste is sent overseas for landfill.
    2. Its sold to other countries...so wheres the blummin money going?

In this part of Hampshire, we've had recycling collections for many years. The system works a treat because it's simple i.e. one wheelie bin (or one bag) for all recycling except glass.

Green waste is not collected unless you pay extra for special green waste collection bags. Most people take it themselves to the local tip. Whatever the collection method, the green waste is composted in bulk and resold as a soil conditioner.

Sadly, I've just done my 5K walk in the local lanes and spotted enough plastic, glass and metal litter in the hedgerows to build another "bird's nest" type stadium in time for 2012!

Hello. We have to separate our green, brown or clear glass into different bins here in the South of Hampshire.Imagine my dismay when i visited the the re-cycling center, took the wrong turn, and found myself passing a large bay area that contained green, brown and clear glass mixed and crushed. How's that for an exercise in time wasting ! !

Here where I live we have a confortable system of paper bin, landfill bin, compostbin (whichstays always empty because I compost all my kitchen waste) and plastic/tincans sack. Glass we bring to the big public bins (sorted by colour). We get along very confortably... mostly because we have a large house, half of the garage is full of bins, if we were pressed for space it would be difficult, lol.

In my old place in Italy wehad recently passed from a long time system of "everything goes the same way" (green, paper, glass, batteries, cars, ships... all in the landfill) to everything sorted out by bin, and italians were going stark raving mad!!! :D
