Yay! I have a garden shredder!!! [IMG]
This model is for offer at a very decent price at NOrma, it had ggod reviews so we decided to giveit a try. Originally I had intended to buy one of the Bosh models, but the budget only stretches that much and after much thought we decided to get this offer. The bigger twigs go in the pile of wood for the stove anyway so we don't need a very powerful machine, and this one has the advantage (for me) of being extremely quiet. After several years of working in very noisy enviroments I definitely appreciate silent machines.

Can't - have to shred tons of mine first! :D
they pruned the five huge poplars in our meadow in spring and left a mountain of twigs to sort out. Can shredded dry wood be used directly as mulch, like pine bark? I don't mind throwing it in the compost with grass clippings mixed in, but just wondering. It should not rot so fast as to deprive the soil of nitrogen, me thinks.

I have been busily shredding all day, very happy with my new machine.

Well, spent the day on the meadow, by the twig mountain, with the shredder and hubby. We sorted perhaps one tenth of the wood, picking the larger twigs for the firewood pile and shreding the rest. I ended up with about 500 liters of wood chips, that I carted to the compost corner, to be mixed with greens as they come along. I wonder if we will ever see the end of that mountain, lol. The shredded twigs look and feel lovely, butI decided not to use them directly as mulch after all, to stay on the safe sideand compost them.

A quick tip using this type of 'drum shredder'.

The cutter can sometimes clog when shredding soft green material, however it can be cleared by putting a couple of branches through.

So always shred your soft green material first then the branchy stuff last.

We shredded down so much stuff in these few days that we knowall his mean tricks, lol, but thanks.
Yes the product reviews hinted that it could be a bit tricky on soft green stuff, and it can but we soon learned to get along. I really like how silent it is. Makes less noise than the kitchen food processor. :)
