    Hi!
What causes the leaves of an evergreen plant to turn yellow?
    Kind regards

Hi Janet sorry about the delay. I have been trying to google it madly and the only thing I have found to explain it is that it is only semi evergreen when it is in England apparently.

The laurel hedge I have goes yellow underneath the thicker foliage so I don`t know if it would be in a similar planting situation.

Is it otherwise healthy? Has this never happened before? Maybe a nutrient deficiency of some sort. There are a few very experienced plantsmen and women on the forum who I am sure will know immediately. I am still only just learning about plants and nutrition.

    Hi! Claire,
We planted four Japanese Honesuckle plants in June and the growth of each plant has been very healthy. I posted a question about them a few weeks ago in the section for disease, as one of the plants had black/greyish spots on its leaves, as well as a few yellow leaves at the bottom. I got a very helpful reply telling me that this was a disease that Japanese Honeysuckle sometimes got and that the leaves would fall off, but would grow back again. This has certainly happened with that particular plant, as some of the leaves are turning yellow/brown and then falling off. The reason I posted a similar question in this section, is that yellow leaves have started to appear near the bottom and middle of the other plants, and these plants don't have black/grey spots on the leaves, so I wondered if there was maybe another reason for the leaves turning yellow. I feed the plants once a week with Miracle Grow and the growth is certainly healthy. I also spray the plants once a month with an insecticide, as some of the leaves have holes in them. I wasn't aware that Japanese Honeysuckle were semi-evergreen in Britain (I live in Scotland), so maybe this is the cause. As I'm new to gardening, I was getting worried incase I was doing something wrong.

    Kind regards
    Janet

    Good afternoon, Ladies. :)

I have three Honeysuckle ... L periclymenum (white/pink/yellow flowers), L 'brownii' 'Dropmore Scarlet' (orange flowers) and L Heckrottii 'American Beauty' (orange/yellow flowers). The L 'brownii' one I brought from England seven years ago where I had it for many years in Bucks.

They all get yellow leaves (the L periclymenum more than the other two) and are not 100% evergreen with me although the labels say they are and I don't get frost.

I have assumed it was nature's way of renewing itself as new leaves are already appearing where the yellowing ones are about to drop.

Honeysuckles are tolerant of many conditions, from near-on drought to moist soil. All three of mine have their roots in the shade and their foliage in the sun.

I will look forward to seeing what our 'experts' have to say on this.

Hi! To the Lady of Leisure,
Yes it seems that my plants may be going through some natural changes, which is very reassuring for me. Also a big thanks to Claire for her help as well.

    Kind regards
    Janet

Even evergreen plants lose their old leaves, but they do it gradually, not all at once in the autumn like deciduous trees and shrubs.
