Hi everyone. I need to mulch a recently planted jasmine and a virginie creeper. I have just made a bed a bit bigger and as a result have some turf. Could I use the turf (upturned of course) as a mulch? I also have a bag of straw left over, was for the strawberries in the summer. Is this suitable as a mulch for roses perhaps, with a bit of top soil on top?

yep you can literally use anything as mulch: bin bags, carpet, grass clippings, turves, wood chippings

I wouldn't try using face-down turf as a mulch. Grass is tough and has the ability to sprout from the roots you've exposed. And if there are any perennial weeds in the turf, they stand a good chance of re-growing even if you've turned them on their heads!

You could put your spare turfs into a stack as a long term project to create more top soil.

I've only ever used straw under strawberries where the plants keep the straw in place. You'll need to anchor it down so that top soil layer you mention would need to be able to resist strong wind.
