    Hi all,

I've just bought a new house and my garden is just soil, I have digged and raked it to level it properly. And now, I would like to sow lawn seeds but am wondering if it is not too late. I live in Liverpool and it rains quite a lot but not sure about the temperature.

Also, do you think I can compact the soil with a lawn roller because it is hard to level 100%? (and then I would areate 2 to 3 inches the soil again)

    Do I absolutely need topsoil?

I am a beginner but is motivated but don't have a lot of budget so please feel free to advise me how I could get the best result with the cheapest price (I am ready to invest myself though, physic work does not scare me)

    thanks in anticiapation

    Jay

    0) and welcome.

Liverpool also gets cold as well as wet, if my memory serves me correct.

So I would say it's probably a bit late. If it were me I would plant in spring, and make sure I have enough water to water whern necessary, that way it can establish before the cold and wet.

With regard to top soil, I wouldn't unless what you have is very poor, but make sure you get out any stones and weed roots as possible.

I don't think it is necessary to compact, I have recently seeded a lawn area here and didn't compact, worked out OK for me.

    I am no expert, JMHO.

Good luck, let us know how you get on. :thmb:

Jay, I would agree with Jan, leave it until April. Had you been further south I would have said give it a try. I personally wouldn`t put a heavy roller over the area.:thumb:

I'd sow the seed now Jan, they are talking about an Indian Summer so I think there is time for it to establish before the winter. I wouldn't roller it though, if the soil is a bit 'fluffy' then it will need some compacting, the cheap way to do this is to walk all over it on your heels, it may take a while. Then rake over the top gently just enough to loosen the surface before sowing the seed. Good luck!

Now is a fantastic time to be seeding lawns. There's plenty of warmth about and loads of moisture and your lawn will have plenty of weed free time to establish and to get it's root system down before everything kicks into life next year. Check your long range forecast for your location, Liverpool isn't Antarctica :gnthb:

    Yep go for it!!!

Perfect time for germination, soil temps are still up(at least 10dc) and lot of moisture (rain and morning dew)

Im right into loads of scarifying and over seeding at moment with work.

    Totally perfect right now!
