Kandy, Phone up a scafold firm, they have to regularly replace scafold boards due to H &S and are often happy to sell the old ones on for a few £. Farr stronger than 4x1 and a lot cheaper.

Kandy I agree with PAUL, some of the builders are glad to take it off their hands so best go and have a word with them but make sure to roll your eyes and lashes. The only down side with builders bag is it is like hanging baskets they need to be watered daily.

just a tip i work for a skip firm and we constantly get scaffold boards from sites thrown in skips and yes they just get scrapped so try your local skip hire firms for your raised bed requirements

Watch out for loft conversions in your area. When they do a conversion, they have to take out the ceiling joists where they are putting a new floor. The timber tends to be 5x2 which is almost perfect for a raised bed. The contractors will give the joists to you if you take them away.

Lol Freddy don't laugh but we have done ONE  terrible I know.

I have to confess that we needed to clear right at the bottom of our number one plot in order to make room for some beds down there as well as a shed (not made yet) wood shelter etc. before we start on plot number two with the beds but what with the weather and my addiction to 'talking' things are going an awful lot slower than I first imagined.

This allotment growing is very much a social scene but it's also a blooming brilliant way of finding out what to grow, where to grow it and what problems the guys are having, where they source things from etc...... I just wish there were more ladies come to think about maybe the guys are thinking just the same thing or maybe not!:D Hel.xxx.

Hi Helen. Well, one is one more than none :) At least you've made a start and I'm sure there are many other things to be getting on with that require your time and attention. Cheers...freddy.

Freddy, I started with just two boxes on the lottie simply because my carrots onions and beetroot were naf. now I have 8 boxes.

In July first week when the moon was waning I planted carrots and now we are eating baby carrots from this box.

I intend to put more boxes next season. Helen It will be slow to start with but before you know it you will have lots of them.

Looking good Fancy I really like the name plate too on one of the boards pretty cute.

I have done some pebble plant markers and I'm really pleased how well they look and the best thing about them they didn't cost me a penny (Bobs kinda price!) the large pebbles were a gift from our neighbour and the paint used was from my huge collection of paint pots..... I just don't know what it is with me and paint I'll buy any wacky colour to use in the garden as long as it's cheap and a good brand.:lollol:

I'm sure the guys down on the allotments must think I'm mad with our pebble markers but I think it's fun and it's great for little'uns to read what is planted.Hel.xxx.

Hi folks. When it comes to veg, I think raised beds rule (did I say that already?). This is my first year back (growing veg) and I have NEVER had such good looking crops, my parsnip tops are 3ft high ! Had a lovely crop of carrots (all gone now :( ) I think what REALLY helps is the depth of soil that you get when using this method. Also, it all seems more controllable, weeding/watering etc. My biggest problem has been the blasted caterpillars  They've totally destroyed my autumn/winter cabbages. Ah well, just gotta put it down to experience. Next year most of my beds will be netted, that'll show 'em ! Cheers...freddy.
