Many thanks for the replies, and Verdon Extra has just been applied, and I am armed with a pack of seed to resow when approprite.
What was this stuff anyway, it sure does spread itself around

An easy and foolproof solution is artificial grass. If you look at some of the products available in todayâ??s market, youâ??ll be quite surprised. This is also a permanent solution, which makes your lawn look great all year round and gets rid of that annoying task of having to mow the lawn. Personally I like EverLawn at artificialgrassuk.com

when you re-seed make sure its with an appropriate grass seed mixture as you'll need one for shade.

rake out the dead stuff, scruff up the soil as the seed will need to be in contact with the soil and dont scimp with the seed.
