This one is stuck at twenty past four in the afternoon, but its right once a day which is better than no clock at all.

      Hi Woo,

Lol :hehe: Tea time is a good time.

Marley will be along after bell ringing tonight, hopefully with some pics of her church.

Meantime, if you like vertigo, try this one,

Bit of failed lath & lime plaster at west putford church again, we ended up replacing the whole lot, due to health & safety issues.

      Hi Ziggy,
The earliest digital clock I have ever seen was in St Mark's Square, Venice.
Am I wrong or are there earlier ones ?

You could be right Alice, all I really remember was the pidgeons & the young tour guide, hormones run quite strong in an 11 year old (for the tour guide, not the pidgeons :o)

:thumb: Ok, I had a good look around the base of the tower last night but could see no signs of any cracks anywhere Ziggy but they are substantial stones I think... I got a chance to just run up to the Bell room quickly & snap a few shots for you Zig & Penny... First off the tower.. This is the tower door we go in & out of it is West facing..

This chap is quite interesting too

And these are a few shots of our bells. We have six that were re-cast & re-hung in 1908 by Gillet & Johnston.. The fact they are Gillett bells means they have a beautiful sound to them..
The huge steel cradle they hang in make little room to move about in there but you get the idea I think.. :D

      #3,4 & 5 in their cradle above..

This is the stop of #6 our big Tenor above & below is the bell itself. It weighs in at 11cwt, but we are pulling 12 cwt when you include all the rope, wheels, stay, Steel et.. Good job they run on ball bearings..!!! :D

So those are our bells.. Got some beautiful stained glass windows too..

      Nice one Marley.

Your tower has been braced at the corner with butresses, making it much less likely to develop cracks from the bells movement.

I was going to say, someones nicked your sundial, till I saw the bit about the clock,
now i'm going to say, somebodys nicked your clock !

I can make out a few putlog hole stones, one to the right of the bottom of the window & one to the left of the niche.

These were holes thru the wall that wooden scafold poles were tied thru to a scafold either side of the wall as it was being built. They were blocked up as the scafold came down & are often left hollow. If their pointing fails, they make good nest sites for bees & wasps. We found a medieval paint crock in one at North Curry church.

Masons still do things to annoy the painters, even now:D

Serious bells Marley, like the ghost in the pics toos00k

:thumb: Thanks for the info Ziggy.. I shall have to have a look for the putlog hole stones then... I am always intrigued how they did things in the past.. It is a beautiful church but has had quite a few additions in Victorian times when they put the railway tunnel under that side of the village Ziggy I do have to say.. Some nice little pieces inside too though, like the organ.. I am a bell ringer 1st, though, who is fascinated by the churches & their histories, that the bell towers are attached to... :lollol::D

Penny, are you Canadian born and bred?

I spent some time working in Vancouver. I love it. I can't describe how lovely it is, and how nice the people are.

I love Britain though, with its ancient history. A place like Sutton Hoo makes your spine shiver.

Cant have one without the other :D

      Heres a detail of one.

      http://www.norwich.gov.uk/webapps/citywall/38/General/38_Gen06.jpg

      Not one of my jobs.

I love the sense of walking into the past when going into a bellringing chamber. Because they are not used as much as other rooms, its like compressing time, taking all the weeks out & just leaving the weekends. Bits of stuff about previous ringing sessions (Marley will tell me the proper name for those, something like carillion I expect) Old photos & usually old jam jars

Marley; thats fascinating about your church. I love looking around them and it's great that your parishoners have taken the time to explain some of the features.
