We have a 3 year old crab apple tree , Malus John Downie . Viewing it today I saw traces of some dreadful disease or blight (?) The pics show the leaves are shrivelling and turning brown/black. The leaves just crumble when you grip them. There is also signs of this on the developing fruit. It has effected about 10% of the leaves . What is this ? Is there a remedy?
    TIA

Fireblight/scab/canker??? I haven't really a clue. If no one else can help, I would suggest you put a search on google for crabapple disease.

That looks like Apple Scab. Spray at weekly intervals with Copper Sulphate or Bordeaux mixture or use a fruit tree recommended systemic fungicide. It is not normally death dealing, but it is unsightly. Also helps if you remove the damaged fruit and burn or bin, not compost, ditto leaves if not too many.

Thanks Palustris and Tweaky for the advice - it does appear I have apple scab, the page below summarises it very well. The pics are exactly what I got !

I will spray it with Dithane 945 as soon as I get some . I have removed most of the damaged leaves and fruit and disposed of them . Problem now is I have a very lob sided and unsightly apple tree - so yet another problem to resolve :D

    BTW

Dithane will clear it, but don't use the fruit for jelly this year. Spray again with Dithane next year but do it when the leaves have just come out.

Also do a winter tar oil wash in early january before the buds open.

Murphy morteg tar oil wash has been withdrawn so I use 50ml of jejes fluid in 5 litres of water.

thanks for the tip. I presume I just wash the branches where the buds are going to form with the Jeyes solution not the trunk . I also need to move the tree, I planted it far to close to the fence , will January be the best time for this as well ?

I lightly spray the whole tree, that way you kill off overwintering pests aswell.

Jan is a good time to move it.
