Has anyone got any ideas for groundcover under pine trees. We have a row of established trees that have been shaped into a hedge. The branches come of at 45 degrees,so we are constantly weeding under the trees. It is dry under there (although weeds thrive),any ideas ?

Pachysandra terminalis. It`s about the only thing that will grow under Leylandii. It`s evergreen, low growing and flowers.:gnthb:

I agree with Dave about Pachysandra. Epimedium mught be worth a try too. The yellow flowers are described as insignificant but it has lovely heart shaped leaves that turn bronze, late in the year.

Maybe try Ivy as well - there are quite a few variegated ones. Someone I know has a huge Cypress tree in her garden and grows Vinca under it as well (although it can spread very easily).

If I can jump into this thread - I was also going to ask what plants can live under a pine tree. Would any type of ferns survive?

If not what would the spread on a Pachysandra be, and could I plant them this autumn?

    TIA Harry

Ferns like shade AND damp. If your location is too dry Harry, they won't be happy.
