Hi, I don't know much about fungi and was slightly concerned to see some mushrooms growing on my Forsythia this afternoon, after spending some time on google I found a picture of what looks like the culprit, a "Judas' ear fungus". Unfortunately I couldn't find any information about if it was harmful to my plant or not, but did find a lot of info about cooking it (definitely not going to try that) and I would greatly appreciate any help in the matter. I just want to know if it would kill the shrub or pose any risk to my cats.

This is the picture I found on the internet of the fungus (my phone doesn't link to the computer so I can't load my own pictures up).

    Thanks :)

Auricula auricula judae is rare on Forsythia x intermedia. Many Sambucus sp survive with the Fungus present but it could be an early sign your tree is dying. I would take semi ripe cuttings now making sure they are fungus free though.

Thanks Colin, I may be wrong about the type of fungus but it does look exactly like the image I posted (although I know different types of fungus can look very like another). I'll certainly take some cuttings tomorrow, it is a very old bush - we've lived here since 1978 and it was a mature shrub then - and I'd hate to lose it completely.
