A visitor the other day told me that I should get some seaweed and put it around the bottom of the rose and cover with soil? Is this a good thing? He also told me banana skins round clematis is good and promptly run off with my skins and put them round my climbers :)

Hi Little Miss. Seaweed(Kelp) Is about as good as it gets for Roses and it rots down very quickly as it as no Cellulose in it and it contains about 70 minerals and Enzymes Ect.If you dig it in the soil it will work wonders or you can use it as a Mulch.Hope this is some help to you.

make sure you wash it thoroughly if you collect it yourself as the salt content is understandably high:thumb:

Hi Kalmia your suggestion was sound and on reflection I should have mentioned about the Salt content and that I don,t wash my seaweed but lots of people do. Good for you.:thumb::)

Hi LMRR, Poole entrance low tide tomorrow is about 6am or 6.30 pm about half hour later at the quay (page 4 of the Echo). Beware harbour mud in quite a few places, you could try just beyond the bottom of Evening Hill good firm sand and some gravel, the windsurfers are not likely to be much in evidence at low tide but watch out for bait diggers and cocklers. If you go on a few hundred yards from Evening Hill you can park for free a little way up the first road on the left, Brudenell Avenue.

You will probably find greater quantities on the rocks like Kimmeridge, or any of the other similar places along the Purbeck coast. Just make sure you get enough for both of us and drop mine off in Parkstone [IMG]

Banana skins are very good for the roses.Perhaps your visitor should have put them at the bottom of your roses instead of the clematis:)
