Hi fred1935, yes your goldfish is ok and actually looks quite healthy. There are some as you noticed with some protuberant eyes, and some with what looks like bubbles on the head: all normal !!![IMG]

I hope you don't mind if I tag along... but since we're talking about oddities a fish of mine has change colur dramatically over the past month, turning from vivid red to corpse-witish:D poor thing. she(cause she laid eggs more than once) looks healthy and fine.... but why has she changed colour while the others haven't?

Wisteria found this bit of information on a forum,
    My fish are changing colour
A fairly common situation arises when fish literally change colour, either all over or just parts of the body. The most common situation is when previously coloured fish turn white. Fish skin colouring is a complex subject. Fish skin contains different types of pigment cells or chromatophores, which are under the control of the hormonal and nervous systems.

Fish which are diseased often change colour, but this is usually a fading/darkening/dulling of the skin rather than an actual colour change. There are a few conditions in which there is a colour change but these are rare.

The most common causes are either nutritional deficiencies, so one could try a change of diet, water chemistry such as pH or hardness, or simply genetics.

In virtually all cases the fish appear perfectly healthy apart from the colour change and eat and swim normally. So apart from perhaps changing the diet and checking water parameters there is nothing that can be done to reverse the colour change.

As a thought, it might be a little upsetting if your goldfish becomes a whitefish, but pity the koi owner who has paid several hundred pounds (or dollars) because of the fish's perfect colours / pattern, simply to watch the colour and patterns disappear!!!!

Lol: fortunately this is not the case.... I only hope it is nothing bad... changing diet would be a problem as she lives in a little pond with all the others.... since this has started only a few months ago and the conditions in which she is living has not changed significantly over the past year and 1/2 I'm starting to believe it is something genetical, like some sort of ageing...thank you by the way

Just to it's depth 2ft, I didn't fancy digging a hole so I bought the tank. Seems to be doing fine.

Quite a few years ago now I built a pond and bought 10 little fish, one of them turned out to be a white one, the biggest too and I think it was the one producing all the little ones.

Thank you all for your comments.

What is a mirror carp like?
Is it only bad to have in your pond if you have Koi?
I have been told that some carp will eat blanket weed. Don't know which type or if it is true.

Mirror carp are quite attractive they have large scales that reflect the sun can grow big.
Usually Koi are kept on their own the purists would not have anything else with them to cause a distraction.
I don't know any fish that will eat blanket weed there's no more a voracious fish than a Koi they will eat almost anything with the exception of blanket weed Grass Carp have a reputation for clearing duckweed in a pond but even they wont eat the dreaded blanket weed.

If nothing eats blanket weed, guess I will just have to keep putting on the waders and twiddling with my rake!

Thought I would bring this up to date with a few pics.
Water Lily, this is the very first one on a plant that has been in the pond a couple of years, I'm pleased as punch, there's a second bud too.

And here's another bud on a different plant. Trust the duck to get in there.

    A general close up.

And a general view, all taken yesterday.

That's lovely, Fred. I love your pond, it's the type we could fit in our garden but fear the upkeep would be past us now:( Still, I enjoy looking at yours.

    cheers

Thank you, I can understand your concern re upkeep but mine was built with mainly recycled matterials. The tank I had to buy second hand and eventually after trying many small pumps I did buy the smallest one I could find with a filter and uv light, it works a treat and keeps the pond lovely and clear. Otherwise it only costs for the fish food and the small amount of electricity, very well worth it to me, I can watch it like some watch the TV. lol.
