Are these little critters to be encouraged in the garden? I see them scooting along my fence most mornings and have found an old stash of nut shells so I think I am on a regular route for them, if there is such a thing. So are my pot plants in danger?

If I had red squirrels in my garden, I'd encourage them - but the greys are spreading the deadly squirrel pox virus to the reds, and they are so much more vulnerable. So yeah to reds from me, and a nay to the greys.

I'm afraid that as cute as they appear they are vermin, rats with fluffy tails, and should be treated as such

I can't believe that garden centres sell specific food for squirrels:mad:

HI all, lucky to get red squirrels, but my some of my family live in Liverpool near a sanctuary for them-can`t remember the name and they get reds there.

My cat doesn`t seem to have much luck catching birds (good the bell on her collar works then), but just loves to take squirrels on. She sits in ambush under the conifers and just waits for them to scoot along the top of the fence. Shes a real tiger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are reds on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour; apart from KL's "izzel of widget" the only place "darn sarf" you find them now.

no squirrels but the magpies can do a good job of digging up bulbs and pulling plants out. I have watched them do it and can't figure out why.

I have taken to putting sticks in my pots and in the flower beds now. It seems to have stopped them (for now at least!)

Squirrels have just discovered our strawberry patch today and have shimmied under the chicken wire I put over it! And they don't run away when you shout at them! Gaah!
