who can help give some advice to a dear friend in legal/financial trouble. Apparently a 'small' book keeping error has put them at risk of losing their home and everything they own. Don't know the full detail yet but they are in great distress. They have small children as well.

Would be extremely grateful for some input.

Sorry I can't help Daisees, I do hope you get someone to help your friend. Bookkeeping is a tricky business, I know through personal experience & work. I hope it isn't as bad as it seems.

    cheers

A lot of insurances have a free legal advice line and often its a general advice rather than just motor or house related. otherwise, quite a few lawyer will give a free 30 min consultation. or maybe worth contacting citizens advice?? If they happen to be members of any trade union, they also will have a legal advice line. hope that helps

Do they have an accountant that they can confer with?

I hope that they get the matter sorted out as soon as possible - it must be very distressing. :(

I fear I mislead you all. When I said book-keeping, I didn't mean it quite that literally!

Citizens Advice Bureau will set up a consultation with a local solicitor, if the fee hasn't gone up it usually costs £10 for this one session to advise on the best way of handling whatever the problem is. Hope this helps.

A small book keeping mistake........ Would have to be a very big and seriusly inept cockup or more likely a fraudulent dodge/ gamble thats been found out.

Either way your freind will need Specific financial/ tax advice from a specialist accountant/ solicitor or both, Citezens advice and the like will most likely be too generalistic.

Don't know what it is but it's not fraudulent as a) seems like an insurance that's involved has agreed to cover the legal fees (so panic over) and b) they are a very sweet, honest Christian family who are totally devastated by this. My guess is that he has messed up his income tax returns or somesuch and as a self employed person, that probably amounted to a tidy sum. IR can be pretty unforgiving when it comes to that sort of thing.

Thanks everyone - I'm closing this now as it seems to be getting sorted.
