I had some really nice cabbbages growing in my little garden until recently the nice firm heads just started to burst open. Now they look horrible as if the were shredded.

Any advice welcome please. The variety is similar to Hispi.

Two possiblities 1) are they bolting? 2) have pigeons got at them?

They are not bolting. The pigeons have been around lately ok. I would upload a photo but I couldn't see how.

Hi fixerman. As far as I know, veg that bursts is sometimes associated with a good watering following a dry spell. Cheers...freddy.

Freddy has hit it on the head there, I think, Fixerman. You find it in drought situations, were plants go a week or so without water, the leaves toughen up. So when it rains, or they are watered, the leaves cannot expand and they split, instead. The secret is, keep the gound moist. :)

Thanks David & Freddy. I think you lads have hit the nail on the head. The plot was quite dry for a while and there is a tree right on the edge taking more water out of the ground. Then we had heavy rain......!!!!!

Shame they were looking really good. But I am supplying the street with lettuce and loganberries. We can't have it all I suppose.

    Thanks again.:thumb:
