I would like to grow a cherry tree, any recommendations, I have a small garden, but would want it to fruit fairly quickly, no patience. Any ideas most welcome.

Not knowledgeable enough to advise on variety, but for a small garden I would go for an espalier: takes up less room and is easier to net (to keep the birds from eating the cherries before you do).

We have a large one, but was here when we moved in. No cherries as the birds eat them all, so I would go with the espalier option. Also I understand they can have very invasive root systems, so do not plant to near a building or your house.

    That's my total knowledge.

We had a Morello cherry at our last house. It was trained flat against a fence and fruited after a couple of year. Very good flavour cherries, althought you don't get many on a small tree. The birds went mad for them so it was essential to put a net over the tree when the fruit was ripening. Netting the tree was easy because it was against the fence.

Thanks, Prastio, Tweaky and Beechleaf for your contibution, will have to do a bit of googling to see which variety is best. I think I will be fattening up the birds of the neighbourhood, by what you say.
