Just listening to the news on radio 5 Live. And there is a petrol station in Cornwall charging, £1.99 a litre, for unleaded, that`s near enough £9 per gallon.

he's just been on national radio, his arguement was pretty strong. He says that his station is usually frequented by very local trade but during the dispute, people were driving to use his station because the 3 local petrol stations had run out. In an effort to conserve his stock for his regular customers, he increased the price from 8am til 6pm and rationed the sales to a max of 6 litres. He also gave a discount voucher reducing the cost of an MOT at his garage from £50 to £30 in the knowledge that his regular customers will benefit.

I think it is harsh to criticise until you here both sides of the arguement and I think alot of the problem is the press sensationalising the story. If they didsn't focus so much on stations drying up etc people wouldn't be panic buying and the problem wouldn't have arisen.

    I cant understand panic buying
once your tank is full how much more can you get ?
and if they are filling cans ,unless needed for work reasons, and you would have to prove it,then how can you panic buy

I heard this man being interviewed then a local (woman) taxi driver who said this man is greedy (alledgedly!), the discount vouchers were for his own garage which is shutting, has a shop etc .

What I can't understand is, why did he have to put the price up? He said lots of non locals were going to use his garage that day - how did he know that at 8a.m.? Why did he just not ration the amount sold? that would have seemed the fairest to me. He also said there were 3 (I think) other local garages, one of them being Sainsbury's - do you think he would have put the price up that high if Sainburys hadn't run out?
    £5 a gallon? It was 56p a gallon when I started driving.

    cheers

I think its basically people filling up with fuel when they don't really need to or don't usually. A lot of people only put in £5 or £10 a time because they don't do a great deal of milage. But when they here about shortages they then go out and put a full tank in, just in case, even though what they buy will probably last them weeks. As this isn't a stations 'usual' selling pattern, stocks begin to run dry.

    good one inter!!:D

Sorry Borrowers, you heard more of the interview than I did, I got pulled away from the radio. I did hear the part about the local filling stations running dry but not about him being known locally as greedy(alledgedly!!) or that his garage was closing down. I suppose it makes the vouchers he was offering pretty useless!! Who knows if he'd have put the price up if other filling stations hadn't have run out, he says not. With cases like this its hard to judge, he did state he was a big donor to charity, strange that the local branded him greedy?!?!

There is no excuse for putting prices up to that extent, in fact it should be illegal and I think these kind of people should be prosecuted.

Why not do the same as our local garages...put a limit on the amount of fuel you can purchase in one day. There is absolutely no justification in increased prices. He bought it at a cost...and should continue to supply it at his normal charges. He wants locking up and so do the others operating the same system. I would certainly avoid his garage like the plague when things get back to so called normal.

Regarding his charge for MOT's....there is no such thing as basic price for MOT's. The testing station sets it's own rates...so there is no such thing as a discount.

He is just profiteering in the worsed manner.

Did I sound a trifle angry......;)

Thank goodness for that but I think that it has shown some of us how reliant we are on petrol pumps. Even my 22 year old daughter who is looking for a new car is looking for how many mpg it does rather than the colour:D

But if this is to happen again think all garages should to be fair limit amount and not allow top up sof 5 -10 pounds.

Well I have not been to a garage for a few weeks and still using my wee Modus deisel get good milage.
