Hi, quite new to gardening, can anyone tell me if there is an alternative to a grass lawn. I have an area of my garden which i don't want to grass but want ground cover (something different). Any ideas welcome

Do you still want to walk on that area? Is it sunny or shady?

:) Well it all depends on size & light etc... If you still want a green look you could try Chamomile or Thyme, but both have to be planted very close for a good cover, so can get very costly depending on size of area. ..:( Plus you cannot walk on them the first year...:( But you could make a focal point with a path made of a hard material..

:)Or there is Prostrate Junipers interspersed perhaps with clumps of different grasses...

:) After that I would probably be looking at gravel, slate or such like with pots & plantings of small shrubs, Alpines & grasses...

:) Hope that is some ideas..:)

Do you mean something similar to grass? If not you could consider gravel, paving slabs or decking.

Or even artificial grass if it gets a lot of use but is only a small area, something like astroturf perhaps?

Then I think you should use creeping juniper, but it is a slow and costly business ( I tried to avoid grass, in my old garden, because I did not want to mow... it's really difficult).

    Some fab ideas here http://www.stepables.com/
I saw an even better website when I was considering this. It had something with lilac foliage you could use-a purple lawn!
Damned if I can find it now though :(

Hi, I'm new here and I know this is an old thread but have been looking around the web for some info regarding artificial grass.

I've been thinking of buying from here: Artificial Grass

Anyone else installed an artificial lawn?
