I've heard of using nothing, sand, or a compost/sand/peat mix?

What type of sand should be used? (if sand should be used?)

I guess a mix of sand and compost would allow good drainage/breathing but also still allow grass to grow in there so I don't have hundreds of circular patches where grass won't grow....

I think I am correct in saying sharp sand will help with drainage

I use 1part coir fibre to 4 parts JI no 1 to 2 parts river sand. [sharpe sand which tals to you when you rub it in your hands unlike builders sand that stays in a ball when wet.] Brush it into the holes or use the back of a rake.

All fomulea work but the aim is to replace the cores or fill th eholes with some good loam to help drainage and increase root activity of the grass plants.
