    Hi Everyone,I have been growing a number of these plants from seedlings found in some of my plant pots after my bird table got blown over a couple of weeks back,so I potted them on and let them grow thinking they were Verbena {tall with purple flowers but can't think of the name}

    Mr Kandy has seen them today and now he think they could be something sinister so I am putting up a photo for anyone that can help me identify them before they get destoyed if they are a weed as in pot:eek:

    Here is a photo of the plant.I have tried Googling but not sure if my plants look the same..Thanks:)

    Hi Everyone,I have looked at the web links and theydo look like they are a bit dodgy so I will get rid of them.:eek: I have one of the verbena plants near by so thought the seeds had come from there.I wouldn't have wasted my time pricking them out if I had realised what I was growing.:rolleyes:

    Thankyou all for your help in trying to identify it:thumb:

    Hehehe! I think the verbena you are talking about is 'verbena bonariensis' - I know how annoying it is when you can't remember the name of a plant!!!

    Blimey Kandy, how did you get that? Or can't you remember - joke! Bet there are people crying with you saying you're going to get rid of it!

    Seriously, that couldn't have been bird seed could it?

    It took me twice to read this thread to actually understand! How bad is that & I don't have any plants that look like that:)

    cheers

    Borrowers, hemp seed is a very common ingredient of bird food. The ripe seed does not contain any thc, and is actually perfectly healthy food even for people. Many varieties of hemp in cultivation are entirely free of thc or as near as makes no difference. Chances are that your plants are NOT the smoky plant.

    I don't know about regulations in the UK, in the US they are quite stark raving mad (can end up in jail for growing hemp!). Check the local regulations, to stay on the safe side. If it is not restricted, and is not going to get you in trouble, you may as well keep it, hemp makes a wonderful leafy background for flower borders.

    Thanks for that info Ivory, didn't know about hemp being a common bird food. Don't know what you mean about 'thc' but i'm sure it's something to do with 'the smoky stuff'. I don't have any of that plant & even thoughI like reggae still don't recognise it!

    I think i've heard of hemp for rope - is that right?

    As you can tell, i don't google anything before i ask! Thanks.

    cheers

    Oh my, I am sorry I mixed up names, of course it's Kandyfloss playing "Saving Grace" (the film is a mighty good laugh, if have not seen it, you must)!

    THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol, this being the chemical responsible for funny giggles, loss of memory and Jamaican hats.

    Yep, hemp is grown for its strong fibers, used for making ropes and fabrics.

    Thanks mate, i could do with watching a good film.

    I don't need anything to make me lose my memory, but i love a laugh although i'm not sure about the rastafarian hats.

    Could go on, but won't. How strange that someone can get it from bird seed! Blame the birds!

    cheers

    Sandra I had my bird table right outside the kitchen window as I was feeding a Robin earlier in the year and was trying to get photos of it feeding.When we had all those strong winds a couple of months back the bird table got blown over and a lot of the seed fell into my pots of Iris as well as in the flower border. I got out what I could but must have missed some.When I saw the little seedlings I was quiet chuffed that I had got seedlings from my verbena so potted them on individualy and have been tending them ready to put in the borders{me thinking of the bees again:)}

    It was only when Mr Kandy saw them that he twigged as to what they could be.I have quiet a few of them so will chuck them in the compost bucket ready to go over to the allotment for composting :eek:

    I don't want them if they don't flower and I certainly havn't seen any films.I also don't want my house,or should I say Garden raided,whatever would the neighbours think:eek:

    By the way,my bird seed comes from Jolley's animal feed supplier:D

    Well, I would rather blame men who make a somewhat unwise use of a very beautiful and useful plant ;) Growing hemp from bird food is nothing new and does not always happen by accident (nope, I don't grow, or smoke, hemp myself, I am just a curious botanical mind)

    This is an interesting link about hemp.
