Makes me think of herbicidal spray drift.

Nope, don't think so. My sunflowers did the same trick this year (sorry I did not spot this ealier), and I use no herbicides (nor could have they come from some neighbour because we don't have any on that side of the garden). At the beginning I could see nothing, but then squinting and frowning I noticed some teally tiny bugs on the leaves, like aphids, but really miniature ones. I don't know if they are the criminals responsible for this, but since I was spraying the roses with their yearly dose of systemic insecticide I sprayed someon the sunflowers too. I THINK that the new growth is now looking better, but only time will tell :-(

its a mystery because i grew sunflowers in the same spot last year, even got into the local paper cause they were so tall :thumb:

Definitely MUCH better after spraying systemic insecticide, though it took somedays to be sure of it.
The old leaves look miserable, but the new growth is normal.

Did you clean the pots properly Sunflowerkid,as you may have caused it before they germinated?.

Sorry for answering instead of Sunflower, but sinceI havehad the same identical problem I can as well try to get to the bottom of it.

I don't know how this started, mine were sown in brand new jiffy pots with sterile soil. They were perfectly ok until I planted them out. One batch went into one place, one batch in another place. One batch was fine one batch went all crinkly and horrible. Go figure. Anyway, I spotted these miniature bugs and sprayed with insecticide (twice) and now they are doing ok. Pity I did not take a close up pic,I could like to know what those little ******s were. A bit like aphids, but smaller, and yellowish. Yuck.
