I got mine a good few years ago now, mainly for emergencies. Came in handy when I went out with the girls and the taxi didn't turn up. As you say they have there uses. You never know when something might crop up, and I would'nt like to go traipsing around trying to find a public phone box, if I was in trouble these days. 02

walnut xxxxxxxxxxxxxx agree ...... the height of bad manners! :thumb:

I won't answer my landline telephone if it rings when I have company (do have an answer service) ..... again, it's the height of bad manners! If it's an emergency, the person will ring back.

We did have a thread about mobiles a long time ago Lol but it may have been more about the pointless, attention- seeking antisocial ringtones.

Mobile phones are getting very small these days and it's worth carrying one in case of an emergency even if you use it for nothing else.
The international code for mobile emergency call is 112. This will work even if you are out of range of your sevice network as it searches for ANY network coverage and uses that. It will work even if the phone is locked and doesn't even require a SIM card to be installed. The only thing you have to remember is to charge the battery once in a while.

Not very clued up on them myself.I was given a mobile a long time ago but as i say i never got the hang of it.I told friends the number but as it was hardly ever used to ring out i always forgot to charge it.I would meet friends and they`d say, I rung you, or, i left a message.Turned out it still had the previous owners " Hello, this is Golly, leave a message and i`ll ring you back".
I don`t know what happenened to it. Probably threw it in the bin.

I don't get it when people call them useless really, I don't think they are. Useful for emergencies of course, it could save your life but that's a given. It's also useful for just keeping in touch easily. I'm in work and wanna tell me girlfriend ,who is a half an hour walk away at her work, where to meet me later? Text her. If I didn't have the phone, how would I manage? We would plan the day before where to meet of course. But because my hours change I need to let her know without taking an hour off work to do so.

Anyway enough of that! I keep mine in the front right pocket of course :D

Plantlife I wouldn't say they were useless either, just intrusive and over used .

I agree with you there they can be very intrusive. Especially when you're talking to someone etc and they pick up their phone in the middle of talking to you, very annoying!

I keep mine in my bag switched off. On the odd occasions I have it on I only get text messages from O2 trying to con me into something I don't need.

I've seen it all now I was at a blood donor session yesterday doing my bit someone a couple of beds away was texting their friend and taking pictures whilst donating blood, not only that there must have been at least 3 people whose phones went off and started conversations mid session, there seems no escaping them at all.

Mine is in my briefcase switched off whilst I'm in the office, people can ring me on the landline if they need to. Most people in the office do likewise or have them on silent, it's really distracting having mobile phones going off at work and there will always be words exchanged if someone's mobile rings unanswered on their desk whilst they have gone to make tea - some people don't understand the concept of 'mobile'.

At weekends & I'm away from the house, it lives in my right hand pocket but hardly ever gets switched on or used - it's for emergencies only or when I've forgotten why I've been sent to the shops. ;)
