We have a new-build house with a small blank canvas front garden & I am not sure which to buy out of the following:- Acer Palmatum 'Orange Dream' or an Acer Shirasawanum 'Aureum'. I prefer the colour of the Aureum, but all the trees found so far in garden centres are no more than 50cm's high and I don't think I can wait for it to grow! Can anyone tell me the growth rates of each type and also their maximum height & spread please? Or if you happen to know where I can purchase an A.S. 'Aureum' that is at least 4ft high?! (I have found much taller Orange Dreams to purchase, but I worry they may grow too tall eventually). Hope someone can help - thanks very much.

Since staring this thread & as nobody had yet responded, I searched further into the forum and found plenty of information to help make a decision - especially from reading entries by Whis4ey, (thank you!) so I apologise for wasting thread-space! I bought a beautiful 5ft Acer Palmatum 'Orange Dream' for £52.99p at David's Nurseries between Droitwich & Worcester and I couldn't be happier!!

Isn't it nice to know that you have been helpful even when you haven't been here :)
Mind you Pam, Aureum is a very very beautiful plant too, although getting one at 4 foot high would be an expensive item indeed
I have three, and none are above about 3 feet even today :)

Thanks for the Aureum picture - I think I will have to get one of those as well perhaps for another spot in the garden - it's such a lovely bright & 'happy' green! I'm glad I found your website now, the japanese style garden is very inspiring!

whis4ey as you seem to have a few of these acer`s i have a quick qustion for you, i noticed this yr when the leafs started to open up on mine, i had like liitle bugs???? all over it, they are a few millimeters in size with like a shell kind of shape, i went to the garden center and they gave me a bug spray, "provado ultimate bug killer" which has done the trick i just wondered what they are and if there was a way to prvent them many thanks scooby....:thumb:

HELP!! I'm really worried about my new 'Orange Dream'. After purchasing it from the nursery - I think just over two weeks ago now - the top leaves are turning brown & drying up, as though singed from the sun. We planted it a few days after purchase, as the soil needed digging over & composting etc beforehand, so it has been in now for just over a week. We watered it in the pot and everyday since being planted and although some top leaves were very slightly brown edged when I bought it, it still looked quite healthy I thought & certainly the best of the choice at the nursery. The first picture is when we first planted it and the second picture was taken this evening. Does anyone know if I should/can do anything to help it and do /you think it will survive?!! (Whi4key - perhaps this is your domain again...please?!)
My photos won't upload, it seems I need to get permission from the site administrator - perhaps this is because I'm quite new to the site. I have sent them an email and if they let me I'll upload the photos!

Are you over watering?
Also .. we have been having quite hot weather lately over here ... is it the same with you?
Tell me more about where you have planted the tree and the conditions and I will be better able to help :)
