I have a Golden Chain tree which I bought at a nursery about 12 years ago, it is about 7 to 8 feet high when I bought it. The problem that I am having is that it has sprouted any new branches or the branches that it has hasn't gotten any longer. The only difference from 12 years ago is that the trunk is about 3 times bigger on the diameter. I have fertilized and tried everything that I could think of, but it just won't get any bigger. It flowers well and it can withstand any hurricane without any movement.

    Got any thoughts
    Jeff

It sounds to me, Jeff, as if what you have is a grafted standard. Which means, it wont get any taller. If you look under the lowest branches there should be a scar where the canopy has been grafted onto the rootstock. If so, there`s nothing you can do to make it bigger. Welcome to the site, by the way.:thumb:

Seems strange to me that it continues to flower well but does not make new growth.

    Are we talking laburnum here?

Thanks for the input, it is a laburnum. The year before last it did not bloom for the first time since I had the tree, but it has bloomed since and every year before that.
Is it possible that I when i set the tree that it was set too deep or something, I don't know

    Anymore ideas?

    Jeff

Could it be some strange dwarf variety, maybe, thats been grafted (as David says) on the top of a standard stem.
I cant see why one of the ordinary varietys grafted as a standard would not grow bigger.

I think if you had planted too deep Jeff it would have probably died by now.

    A picture would be nice.

I am pretty sure it's not grafted, but give me a couple of days and I will send a picture.

    Thanks again.
